Last eight the moat destructive that haa ever taken place here occurred, destroying property estimated to be worth over £IOO,OOO. At about a quarter past seven o’clock flames were seen to ooze from beneath the premises occupied by Messrs Graham and 00., nine and spirit merchants, and before anything could bo done to stop the progress of the flames they had extended to the Union Company’s office, and the bonded store of Messrs T. W. Oarr and Sons. These valuable concrete buildings were erected about five years ago, and cost about £IO,OCO. They contained oil, wool, grass seed, and a large quantity of general merchandise. Mr Oarr was one of the Lady Jocelyn’s passengers, and had, with his family, recently purchased the premises and started in business here. The flames rapidly extended to the of Messrs Pitt and Bennett, auctioneers, passing the rear of the Union Bank and on to Mr McFarlane’s Hall. Presently the Union Bank caught fire, and then succumbed the offices of Messrs Brassey and Fraser, solicitors, Dickson’s Argyle Hotel, besides one or two other minor buildings. Page’s Masonic Hall, the Albion, and a building on the other side of the street, were saved with great difficulty. The insurances are not yet to hand. The whole block is cleared, and had there been the slightest breeze blowing the town would have been burnt down. Later. Union Insurance —Oarr and Sons’ stock, £2OOO ; stock in wool shed, £250; wool press, £250 ; wool shed insurance, £150; Pitt and Bennett, building, £250; MoFarlane, Hall, £500 ; Union Bank, £4OO ; Graham and Oo.’s stock, £27s; seventy-three bales wool, £1000; total, £5175. Colonial Insurance — Oarr and Son’s stock, £1250 ; Butt’s furniture, £150 ; Pitt and Bennetts, improvement, £l7O ; do produce, £260; Brassey’s buildings, £250 ; total, £2OOO. North British and Mercantile Insurance Company MoFarlane’s Hall, £325 ; Carr and Son’s store, £100 ; Oarr and Son’s stock, £500; Carr and Son’s woolshed, £l5O ; [Union Bank buildings, £400 ; Pitt and Bennett’s buildings, £250; total, £2625. National Insurance Company—Carr and Son’s stock, £2000 ; wool shed, £250 ; produce, £250 ; Graham and Co.’s store, £250 ; Union Bank, £4OO j total, £3150.
