CARRIERS' CHARGES.
To the Editor of the Globe. Sir, —I shoold like to call attention to a matter of public interest, and ons to which I ttink the attention of the by Itw committee of the City Council should ba directed. I had occasion to employ a carrier's express van at the Christchurch Kadway Station th : s morning to cart five packages of luggage to my hons >, which took him twenty minutes, including the receiving and delivering, and, hiving handed him a £1 note ti take paymer.t from, be coolly took 4s, or at the rite of 12s an hoar. I r-nnon etrated with him as to the excessive cha'ge, when he produced his card of printed bylaws of the City Council, and 1 ughioely piint=d out that as the by law said —' The charge for one hour or fraot'on thereof Is 4'," he was entitled to charge that amount for a five minute job If he chose, but he did not wish to be hard on me. Now, Sir, I think that you will agreed with me that an alteration is necesfary in this matter, because as the carrier kindly pointed out to me, if he breaks the law, be it a by-law or otherwise, he Is punished, and so must continue his present charges until he is ordered to do otherwise by the City Council. i Trusting that you will kindly Insert thiß, 1 I am, &.o. I NEW CHUM. Jan. 31, 1882.
