fPEB PRESS ASSOCIATION.] AUCKLAND, January 30. The Regatta and the King. The regatta passed off successfully. Mr Sheehan chartered tho steamer Lily to oruise about in the harbor with Tawhaio and chiefs. They also visited the flagship, and were entertained by tho captain. The following were the principal events of interest: — Championship Trading Race, for brigantines and schooners; first prize, £75 and the Now Zealand Shipping Company’s Cup, valued £25 ; second prize, £25, The following entered:—Gisborne, fore and aft (Skinner), 68 tons; Sybil, topsail (Sinclair), 150 tons; Transit, topsail (Jageer), 88 tons; Toreo, topsail (Mitchelaon), 78 tons. A good start was effected, with a southerly fair sailing breeze. Ultimately the Transit won, with Torea second ; time 1 min 43 secs, and deducting tho time allowance 2 mins 12 secs. The Sybil and Gisborne wore nowhere, being caught by the ebb tide, and could not get round the North Head. Trading Cutters, 25 tons ; first prize, £3O and the “ Herald ” Cup. Rangalira, 1 ; Ro-e, 2. Trading vessels under 25 tons ; first prize, £2O and cup. O. H. Street’s Euphomia won on a time allowance, boating Mahnrangi. Yachts, six tons and upwards ; first prize, New Zealand Shipping Company’s cup, valued at £25. Henderson’s new yacht Bits defeated Street’s Winona badly. Tho Torva and Eclipse were nowhere. The sculling races were very unsatisfactory, being in two oases practically uacontested. Scullers’ Race, open to allcomers; first prize, £2O; three miles. H. White defeated Carter easily. Four-Oared Gigs, all comers ; first prize, £25. The North Shore Club beat the Poneonby Club easily. Carter, Floyd, and White palled for the former. Alleged Arson. Joseph Merrick was arrested on a charge of having set fire to hia shop in Albert street on New Year’s Eve. He was remanded. Interesting Item. A deputation of Auckland cricketora met the English team on their arrival by the Rotorua. DUNEDIN, January 30, Interesting News. Amongst the passengers by the Hurunui, for London, ia Mr A. Chatham Strode, who was resident magistrate in Dunedin for many years. A Useful Institution. Tha Coffee Palace Company has issued the first annual report, which shows that since the change of management the profits have been satisfactory. In July, whilst tho receipts were much the same as in December, the loss was £35 per week, whilst during the last eight weeks the profits totalled £205. An average of 264 people patronised the saloons and restaurant daily, and thirty the hotel. The average income is £124 a week. The total debit balance is over £llOO, Curious Disclosures.

In the R.M. Court to-day Hamilton and Willis sued tho Union Steamship Company for £IOO damages for breach of agreement in failing to land the company in Dunedin, from Lyttelton, in time to open on the night advertised. In the evidence they stated that tho expenses of tho company were about £240 per week, exclusive of the arrangements with Miss Pomeroy. She was to receive 70 per cent, of the profits. Tho ease was adjourned till Wednesday. A Pitiable State of Things. It is probable that Otago will bo poorly represented in tho Rifle Association meeting at Nelson. Only Corporal Hutchinson has definitely stated his intention to go irom Dunedin, but it is expected throe or four will go from Oamaru. Prejudging. Waldeman, who was arrested for the Queenstown fire, was hooted and hissed at on his arrival at Queenstown, and rotten eggs were thrown at him. It is stated that appearances lead to the belief that ho had accomplices in the matter.
