A child two and a half years of age, son of Mr Davis, draper, of Geraldine, was drowned in the Waihi River yesterday. Alleged Forgery. John Henry Healey, an old resident, has been remanded till February 3rd on two charges of forging promissory notes. Inquest. At the inquest to-day on the man who fell downstairs at Geraldine on the 14th, and injured his spine so that he died on the 26th, a verdict of “Accidental Death” was returnad.

DUNEDIN, January 26. The New Dredge.

At the dredge demonstration, the Hon, W* Rolleaton, Hon. B. Oliver, and others were present. It was suggested that the new dredge should be called “Union,” as it promised to conciliate the ill feeling between Dunedin and Port Chalmers on the questions of harbor improvement and the deepening of the bar, Mr Ramsay, chairman of the Harbor Board, expressed the opinion that within twelve months the largest steamers would be able to cross the bar.
