[FHB PBESB ASSOCIATION.] AUCKLAND, January 25. Aquatic. The Meroury Bay soulling match for £IOO was won by Carter; time, 22mins. The distance was three and a-half miles. Carter and White en this occasion exchanged boats, as the latter was of opinion his opponent's previous victory was more due to the boat ho pulled in than to his rowing powers. The result, however, proved the erroneousness of White's views. Teaching Power. In Auckland Province, 169 candidates presented themselves at the teachers' examina> tions for certificates. The Native King. Tawhiao and party left for Bewiti, Kaipara, where they will be entertained by the resident Natives, and will stay two days, returning to Auckland. City Improvements. The valuer reports the erection of 22S new buildings in the citv during the year. WELLINGTON, January 25. Fire. A fire broke out in a store formerly occupied by H. W- Mills, in Hunter street. The brigade were quiokly on the spot and extinguished the conflagration before'much damage was done. The origin of the fire at present ia unknown. OAMABTJ, January 25. The Waitaki BridgeThe Waitaki County Council have refused to contribute a further sum of money towards liquidating the debt on the Upper Waitaki bridge till it was completed to the satisfaction of their engineer. The new steam dredge for the Dunedin harbor passed through the straits this morning all well. It has been four monthß and two days out. [PBOH THB OWN COEEESFONDENT OF THE " PBESS.] WELLINGTON, January 25 At a special rrseting of the Cabinet to-day the suggestions and recommendations of the Otago Land Board in reference to the proposals of Government respecting the Otago runs wore carsfullyconßidered and dieenssedat much length. It was ultimately decided to adopt all the recommendations of the Board; and at a meeting of the Executive Oounoil, the Governor presiding, these were formally adoptod and confirmed by Order in Council. This will be publicly notified immadiately. The Premier, travelling overland, reaohed Hawera to-day, and goes on, to New Plymouth to-night. He will pjobably proceed thence to Manukau by the steamer Moßregor instead of waiting for the caatt boat on Monday,
