The market rate of discount has declined to per cent. The Bank rate is 5 per cent. Australian breadstaffs are unchanged; Adelaide wheat, ex store, 565; New Zealand ditto, 535; Adelaide flour, ex warehouse, 425. The total quantity of wheat afloat for Great Britain is 2,910,000 quarters. Australian tallow—best beef, 43s per cwt.; best mutton, 47s 6d. Best Scotch pig iron (No. 1) f.o.b. in Clyde has declined to 52s 6d per ton. The Mails. The Australian and New Zealand mails, via San Francisco, which „left Auckland on December 6th, were delivered here to-day. January 14. Refrigerated Butter. Several hundred packages of Australian butter were brought in the Europe’s refrigerating chambers, and were sold at auction to-day, and realized an average of lid per lb. Singular Explosion. Telegrams have been received reporting that an explosion of a serious nature has occurred on board H.M.S. Triumph, a flagship of the Pacific squadron at Coquimbo, on the coast of Chili. Three seamen were killed by the disaster and seven others seriously injured. Considerable damage was also done to the vessel. PARIS, January 14. Politics and Prayer. In the Chamber of Deputies to-day, M. Gambetta announced that the prayer now used at the opening of the session of the Chamber would shortly bo abolished. January 16. The Murdered French Priest. Further intelligence is to hand regarding the recent massacre of three French priests at Ghadames, on the Algerian frontier of Tripoli. It has been conclusively proved that the Arabs who committed the murder were instigated by the Cadi of the district, and it is expected that measures will bo shortly taken by the French Government for summary punishment of the offenders.
