CRICKET.
ALL ENGLAND ELEVEN T OAMABU TWENTY-TWO. [ PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.] OAMART, January 16. The above match was commenced to-day on the Oamaru Club’s ground. There was a fair attendance of the public. The weather was all that could bo desired. Mr G. Sumpter was elected captain of the Twenty-two. Shaw won the toss and elected to take the field, Price and Snow being the first to handle the willow on behalf of Oamaru. Peate and Midwinter bowled nine overs, and both bowlers maidens, with the exception of two byes in Midwinter’s third over. Off Midwinter’s tenth over Snow got a single. Another single to Rice followed. At this stage of the game Peate bad sent down his tenth maiden. Rice then got a single. A fine ball from Midwinter lowered Bice’s log stump—--I—2—s. Pinch, the new comer, opened by driving one nicely to square-leg for the first couple. Snow got a single immediately after. The latter batsman, who had been in for forty minutes, was clean bowled by Midwinter —2—2 Lawry next took his place at the wickets, when Pinch was clean bowled by Peate—3—2—B. Walls partnered Lawry, but the former was caught and bowled by Peate for the first duck—4—o—B. Nioholls was next man, and lifted Midwinter high to the on, and was beautifully caught by Sootton—s—o—9. J. Millington was next, Lawry getting clean bowled by Peate—6—2— 10. Sumpter (captain) was also bowled In the same over—7—o —lo. DeLautour became partner with Millington, when the latter was well bowled by a twister from Midwinter—B—o—lo. Cooke next made his appearance at the wickets, as DeLautour was caught and bowled by Peate for a duck—9— o—lo.0 —10. G. Millington companioned Cooke, the latter driving Midwinter nicely along the carpet for a couple, when Midwinter had his revenge by lowering Cooke's stumps with a regular shooter—lo—2—l2. Denton was caught first ball at mid-wicket by Barlow. 11 - o—l2 was the state of the game when Moore went to the wickets, the Oamaru batsmen being all at sea with the bowling of Peate and Midwinter, the former having sent down fifteen maidens for two runs, Millington getting a single and a couple off Midwinter, another couple to Moore, and the game seemed to be taking a change. A single to both batsmen brought 20 up. Moore, who had been batting splendidly, was very badly run out by Millington—l2—4—22. B. Balmer was bowled by Peate without scoring —13—0—25. Holmes opened by a fine 3 hit to square leg. Millington, who had been playing with a great deal of confidence, was caught in the slips for 9. 14—9—28. Coates hit his wicket before scoring—ls—o—2B. I. Hewat next made his appearance at the wickets, and opened by a 3 to the fence, and followed it up by another couple to square leg. Eour singles and a2 to Hewitt, and 40 showed on the telegraph. Holmes was bowled by Midwinter—l6—B—42. Cox, after making a single, played one from mid on to his wicket—l7—l—44. Church cemented the partnership by driving Peate to the on for a couple, Hewat doing likewise. Church then let out at Peate, and was beautifully caught by Emmett at long off—l 8—2—49. H. Moore joined J. Hewat, who continued to play splendidly, and lifted Midwinter clean over the fence for 4, the finest bit of the match, bringing his score up to 20, when he was bowled by a shooterfrom Midwinter—l 9 20—59. Hardy failed to scare—2o—o —s9. Darley, last man, added a single to the score, when he was bowled by Peate—2l—l—6o, Hewat played a fine innings. At five o’clock Barlow and Ulyett made their appearance at the wickets, Cooke and Holmes bowling. Barlow opened the hitting I by poking Holmss to leg for a single, Ulyett letting out, got the same bowler away for 3, when he was caught behind the wickets by Walls —I—3—4.1—3—4. Selby, the next man, only added two singles before he was caught by Lawry—2—2—7. Bates began to give the field some work by hitting out to all parts of it, very few runs resulting, the bowling being dead on the wicket. As the batsmen became set the runs began to come rather freely, when a change in the bowling took place, Millington going on at Cooke’s end, Hewat taking the place of Holmes. Barlow and Bates brought the score to 50, when Bates was bowled by Hewat, having made 33. Shrewsbury was caught by Balmer after making 3. Barlow and Midwinter carried the score to 115, when the latter was clean bowled by Hardy, after making 40 in pretty quick time. Sootton, after making 1, was given out for a doubtful catch at the wickets after the English umpire had been unavailingly appealed to, the gome thus stood —6—1—117. Shaw added a few, and the luncheon adjournment took place, the score standing at 127, Barlow being not out for 36, and Shaw not ■ eat for 8. The innings closed for 146, Baric it made 36 and Shaw 16 (not out).
