(By Telegraph.] [Per s.a. Rotomahana, at the Bluff ] LONDON. January 6. A meeting of the Cabinet was held to-day, when the Ministerial programme was under consideration. Dr. Lawson has been arrested on a charge of poisoning his wife’s brother. The proprietor of a school at Wimbledon alleged that accused, who wished to get rid of his brother-in-law in order to obtain certain property which would come to him in the event of his relative’s death, administered a poisonous dose of aconite. The preliminary investigation took place before the coroner, the result of which was that Lawson was committed for trial. Considerable sensation has been caused by the circulation of a report to the effect that the Imperial tomb at Ohiselhurst has been rifled and the remains of the late Emperor Napoleon stolen. The report, whioh proved to be unfounded, had its origin in the fact that a warning had been received from Paris that such an outrage was contemplated. The person named Connell and four associates who were arrested a few days ago on suspicion of being connected with Captain Moonlight and his band, by whom outrages have been perpetrated upon the tenantry of the Earl of Cork, have been committed for trial. The Wesleyan Conference has adopted a memorial against a proposal which; is under consideration for sending a British agent to the Vatican. The “ Times” of this morning has an article upon the state of the finances of New South Wales. The constant scrambling for the surplus is looked upon as a most dangerous proceeding, and it is considered strange that the Treasurer should be unmindful of the" importance of applying any surplus whioh may exist to the reduction of the colonial debt. Carrying out reproductive public works for the benefit of the country is suggested as a most legitimate mode of employing surplus capital, and any proposal for rurther loans is strongly objected to. The President of the United States has issued an invitation to the various American Republics to send representatives to the Conference which meets at Washington in November next. The object of the Conference is to discuss several matters of importance to America, but principally to take steps to prevent European interference in the control of the Panama canal. Bernal Osborne, who was for many years a distinguished member of the House of Commons, is dead. It is believed that the Sultan is intriguing with Franca in connection with the Tunis and Egyptian affairs. The "Times” say# that the relations between Prance and England are strained, the difficulty being attributed to the misunderstanding in connection with the affairs of Tunis and Egypt. Arabi Bey, the Nationalist leader, has been appointed Egyptian Under • Secretary for War. The Government intended to apply to the Courts for a mandamus to prevent the Corporation of the city of Dublin from carrying out its resolution to grant the freedom of the city to Parnell. France repudiates the annexation of the Island of Raiatea, the possession of whioh was recently taken in her name. Gambetta proposes to giant autonomy to Tunis. The appeal whioh Prince Bismarck recently made to the Great Powers to define the position occupied by the Pope, has resulted in a congress being summoned, Bismarck’s declared object being to guarantee the Pope’s independence. News has been received of the death of Riohard Henry Dana, an eminent American litterateur, and the author of “ Two Years Before the Mast.” Karl Granville has forwarded a despatch to the United States’ Government, refusing to admit the right of America to the exclusive control of the canal. The recent election of members of the French Senate has resulted in a gain of twenty-two seats by the Republic. Another meeting of the admirers of Blanqui, the deceased Communist, was held on Sunday in Paris, at whioh a number of inflammatory speeches were delivered. During the course of the proceedings the police appeared upon the scene, dispersed the crowd, and arrested Louise Michel, an amnestied Communist and leader of the movement.
