The late PresidentThe Victorian official “ Gazette,” published to-day, contains a copy of a despatch from Mr Blaine, the American Secretary of State, to the British Minister at Washington, conveying the heartfelt thanks of Mrs Garfield for the telegrams of condolence received from the colonies on the occasion of the late President’s death. Attempt to Fire a Ship. The carpenter of the ship Oasis has been committed for trial on a charge of attempting to set fire to the vessel on the sth inst. SYDNEY, January 13. Russian War Ships.! The Russian war ships Africa, Plastoun, and Weatnic sail hence to-morrow for Hobart and Melbourne.
