CAIRO, January 12. Ai ExplanationIn consequence of the bad impression which has hem created at the Egyptian Court by the construction placed upon the recent a;tion of the English and French Consds-General, in sending their joint notes t< the Khedive, Mr E. B. Malet, C. 8., British representative at Cairo, had aulience of his Highness, in the course of which he took occasion to re-assure him that the British Government had no ntention of departing from

the line of policy it had hitherto followed, or to interfere in future in Egyptian affairs, beyond taking such steps as might be necessary in the event of an outbreak or rebellion, to assure the permanence of the statu quo and the maintenance of his Highness’ authority. Mr Malet farther explained that the course which had been adopted by himself and the French representative in issuing their joint note, was simply intended to re-affirm the alliance which has hitherto existed between England and France in their diplomatic relations with Egypt, and to indicate to his Highness the unanimity with which the two countries were prepared to act in order to secure the prosperity of Egypt.
