The attention of the Government has been directed to the following Auckland telegram circulated yesterday by the Press Association i —" The Government are attacked by both, papers for their oontinued inattention to the representations by the postal authorities and the publio for better fumigating appliances here. Although the mail steamer arrived at noon yesterday, the fumigation will probably not be completed till midnight tonight. The steamer has been delayed for the Southern mail. Great publio inconvenience and loss will be suffered throughout the oolony -which might be avoided by a trifling expenditure upon a. proper smoke home. When the English mail steamer was last quarantined, two clear days elapsed before the mails were delivered in Auckland, yet no attention has been paid to the representations then made to the Government about the inadequacy of the fumigating facilities." The Postmaster-General inform* me that this »"s a oomplete misrepresentation of the facts, the truth being that the oontinued lack of proper appliances is wholly and solely dne to the gross neglect of the Auckland Harbor Board, which exercises the functions of the Board of Health for the port. The Government have made representations to the Board time after timo but ineffectually, and as the Board has entire jurisdiction the Government possesses no authority to interfere to take the matter out of their hands. Farther strong measures, however, will probably be adopted for bringing the delinquent Board to a perception of its duties, and compelling proper fumigating applianoes to be provided withont longer delay. As some fuss has been made in certain quarters about the illness of the Colonial Treasurer, I may as well say that his indisposition has been of the most trifling description, and he is now quite convalescent. He was only absent from office two days, and more as a judicious precaution than through, the severity of illness. Sir Arthur Gordon has gone to stay at Brancepeth, Wairarapa, the station of Mr Beetham, M.H.R. As usual, he did not inform Ministers of his intention to absent himself from the seat of government. Ho kept the train waiting a quarter of an hour, and then miased it after all, but managed to catch it by hard driving along the road, tv short distanoe out of the town. The affair has oaused much amusement.
