In the Supremo Court to-day Michael O’Connor was found guilty of rape on a Maori woman, and sentenced to two years. The indictment against Mr W. G. Garrard, for personation, was quashed. Plummer’s case, for sending threatening letters to Dr. Philson and Mrs Dobson, occupied the Supreme Court the rest of the day. Plummer commences his defence to-morrow. Cutter Capsized. The cutter Mercury, in going into the harbor in ballast, capsized. A man named Layoock rescued the crew, of two men, by means of a dingy. Both men were unable to swim, and were in danger of drowning. Costs from the Enemy. At the District Court to-day Mr J. D. Wickham, of the “Free Lance,” obtained judgment against Mr W. L. Bees for £54 and costs in the recent libel action which was dismissed. WELLINGTON, January 9. The Fraudulent Partners Act. Mr W. H. Tubb, of the firm of Messrs Tnbb and Fergus, storekeepers, Timaru, who arrived here by the Hawes on Sunday, was arrested to-day on a charge of stealing £IOO, moneys belonging to the firm. He will be charged before the magistrate to-morrow. Quietude at Parihaka. The Constabulary at Parihaka are engaged in road-making and ordinary camp duty. The Natives who were dispersed appear to have no inclination to return to Parihaka. This morning, between twenty and thirty dray loads of potatoes were sent away from Parihaka to the Natives living beyond New Plymouth. Charitable JohnA deputation of Chinese waited on the Mayor to-day, to whom they handed a donation of £36 for the Wellington Hospital. The deputation intimated that the Chinese residents in Wellington had decided to become annual subscribers to the Hospital fund. DUNEDIN, January 9. CrimeAt the Supreme Court to-day, the charges of embezzlement and forgery against H. B. Mclntosh, manager of the Walton Park Coal Company, were proceeded with. He was found guilty on one charge of embezzlement, and pleaded “ Guilty ” to two others. He was also found guilty to one charge of forgery, and pleaded guilty to all the others. Sentence was deferred till to-morrow morning. CompensationThe Bailway Department have decided to hand over to the widow, Mrs Woodcock, whose son was killed by the recent accident at Kaihiku, a sum equal to six months’ pay. Another Opposition Leader. The “ Star ” states that a meeting of the Otago Opposition members was held last Friday, under the presidency of Mr Macandrew, but the nature of the business has not transpired. New Zealand practically stands postponed indefinitely, in consequence of certain communications received by his Excellency from the Imperial authorities. It is believed that it has been found there is no eligible opening just at the present time for the utilisation of Sir Arthur's abilities in the service of his country, and that he will therefore sojourn some time longer in the uncongenial political atmosphere of New Zealand, The Government have accepted tenders for the supply of coal to all the New Zealand Railways for one year. In every case New Zealand coal Is to be supplied, and the prices, with one exception, are all under 30a per ton.
