Young Sledmore and Matau wore first over the gorso hurdle, but Hawthorne and Rawonata came down, the former injuring his rider. Lonehand baulked. Coming to the hurdles opposito the stand Matau led ; Young Sledmera second, Sportsman third, Clarence fourth. They wont on in this order to the stone wall, which all negotiated except Lonehand, who persistently refused, and was taken homo amid the jeers of the assemblage. Torrents of rain now fell and the horses were almost hid from view, and it was not until approaching the straight that they could be clearly made out. It was then seen that Sportsman was in fi-ont, Young Sledmere second, King Don third, and Clarence fourth. All these horses got over the doublo hurdlos successfully and also the stone wall, jumping into the poach garden. Young Sledmere went up and took the lead, but as they went up the hill Sportsman again went to the front and cleared the jump at the top, amid loud cheers. Young Sledmore closed up again, and the pair raced at top speed down the road, and it was now looked upon as a certain victory for the Waikato horse. Young more got rid of his rider at the next jump, and Sportsman turned his head at the next and persistently refused. King Don hero came up, end took the jump, amid cries of “ King Don wins,” but these were of short duration, for the gallant, old Wanganui baulked at the next jump. Here Clarence came up, but, not jumping straight, dislodged his rider. Lunn was quickly in the saddle again, but King Don had a good lead, and won by over 100 yards from Clarence. Rawenata arrived ten minutes later. The time was very slow, the oomse being fright fully heavy owing to the rain. Stewards’ Handicap of 100 sova. One mile

Maid of Honor plunged away with the lead, but as they went up the back of the course Miss Domett and the Poet dosed up, and tho two raced abreast until coming cut of the cutting. In the run home Derritt roused tho mare up, and she swept into tho straight with a good length ahead. Maori and Tim Whifflor now closed up also, and ran a grand race for second honors, Maid winning by a couple of lengths from Tim Whifflsr, who boat Maori for second place by half a length. Consolation Handicap, 50 sovs; one milo. Maori 1 Paramena 2 The following entered .—Kenilworth, Maori, Paramena, Badsworth, Harkaway, Stanley. A protest was entered that Maori went inside the post. The decision was deferred till to-morrow, but there is little doubt felt that Paramena will be declared the winner. OHERTBEY RAOE3. Sports and races took place on Monday. The flat race, li miles, was won by Mr Sandford’s Primrose, Mr Mulligan’s Tussock second ; four starting. A trio competed for tho trotting race, Mr Bradley’s Joker gaining first place, Mr Stringfcllow’s Daisy second. MEXHVBN RACES. The Hurdle race, 2 miles, not less than list, over 8 flights of hurdles, 3ft. 6in., first prize £lO, was won by Mr Compton’s Te Whiti; Mr Tiokel’s Smuggler second, Mr Pooock’s Journey third. Nine horses started. There were seven competitors for the Methven Cup, li miles, not less than 10it; first prize 10 guineas. It was won by Mr Olarridgo’s Whinnie, White Stockings second, White Rose third. The Trotting race (Handicap), 3 miles, not less than list, first prize £lO, was won by Mr MoFarlace’s Tib, Mr Wright’s Spencer second. Tho Open Handicap, 10 guineas, li miles, was won by Winnie; Mr Tickel’s Smuggler second, Mr Moss’s Four Hundred third; seven started.
