CHRISTCHURCH. Wednesday, Jandaby 4. [Before J. Marshman and G. L. Lee, Eeqs., J.P.’s.] Dbdnebnnbss.—Mary Cunningham was fined 10s, and cab hire Is,—John Nixon, against whom numerous convictions were recorded, and who had been frequently warned, was fined £3, or seven days’ imprisonment with hard labor. On leaving the Court he turned and thanked the Magistrates for their leniency, saying that he had got off better than he expected.—For first offences three men were fined ss, and ordered to pay for conveyance to the lock-up where expense had been incurred, Lakcenv by a Sbbvant. —Charles Edward Marshall was charged with stealing 4 spoons, 4 knives, 2 forks, 1 steel bit, and 1 book, the whole valued at £1 fid, the property of F. Moßean Stewart, in whose employment the prisoner had been as groom. He pleaded guilty. Sergeant Mason stated that the articles had been pilfered during some little time. The prisoner wss sentenced to one month’s imprisonment with hard labor. Omii Cases. —ln Hazard v Patterson 3s fid, judgment went for plaintiff by default. Scrimshaw v Hamilton and Willis, and Reece v Pearcy, were adjourned for one week. Oother v Doyle was adjourned till January 6th. In Ernest v Green, senior, £1 Ifis for rent, and same v Green, junior, £1 9s on a promissory note, the first defendant pleaded bankruptcy, and the other infancy. Mr Sparkman appeared for defendants. As it appeared by the evidence that the defendants had been using the alias of Westerbrook in their transactions, and the proof adduced of infancy was not considered sufficient, judgment was given for plaintiff in both cases with ooels.
