PRIZE DISTRIBUTIONS.

MELVILLE HOUSE SCHOOL. The annual distribution oC prizes took place on Monday last. The athletic sports competition was held on Friday, the 9th inet., in Lancaster Park ground, and most of the events were well contested. Before the disttibution of the prizes Mr Oook gave a short address to the boys, congratulating them on their year's work. He hoped they would make equal or even greater progress next year, and he alluded to the fine set of scientific apparatus they had jußt reoeived from home, and whioh he hoped would prove an inoentive next year to a more successful study of the elements of science. He also mentioned that phonographic shorthand and book-keeping wouid receive more of his attention next year than those subjects had reoeived hitherto. The prizes for both the school work and the athletio sports were given away by Mrs Oook amid loud cheering. The following is the prize list : Upper Ist—Classics, Wilson 11. Running Long J amp, for boys under fourteen. H. Hargreaves, 1; P. Tabart, 2. High Jump, open to the whole school. J. Pateraon, 4£t 4in, 1; A. Weekea, 2. High Jump, for boya under fourteen. A. Pratt, 1; H. Bowker, 2. One hundred Yards, open to the whole school. Weekes, 1; E. Hutchinson and F. Garland, 2. One hundred Tarda, for boys under fourteen. Wiekea, 1; Pratt, 2. One hundred Yards, for boys under twelve. H. Hale, 1; Bowker, 2. Two hundred and twenty Yards, for boya under twelve. Hargroavos, 1 ; Bowker, 2. Qoarter Mile Race, for boys under fourteen. J. Way, 1; Laurie, 2. This was a capitally contested race, Way winning by a foot. Quarter Mile Kace, open to the whole school.

Weekes, 1; Hutchinson, 2. Seven started, but the race lay between the two above, and, after a determined straggle, it ended in almost a dead beat.

One half Mile Race, open to whole school. Weekes. 1; Duncan, 2. Old Boys' Bace, 220 yards. Seven started for this event, which after a game struggle, was won by L. A. Cuff. Consolation Bace, 220 yards, for the whole school. J. Hoban.

Consolation Bace, 220 yards, for boys under fourteen. J. Buchanan. Consolation Race, 200 yards, for boys under twelve. A. Hawkins.

The Old Boys' Challenge Cnp, for the winner of the greatest number of points in the events open to the whole school, was won by A. Weekes.

After rounds of oheers had been given for Mr and Mrs Cook, the school dispersed for tho six weeks' holidays.
