Afler giving oat the prizes Mr Tanored congratulated the soholara on the good work they had dono during the year, and hoped they would continue in the same way. A email proportion only in such a large eohool could carry cS prizes, but he thought that the habits of diligence and steady application gained by nil who had acquitted themselves Weil in the standard examination would prove of greater ssrvice in after life than the moot costly book. The prize takers were not el ways those who gained most real advantage from* tho school work, and he would always prefer to give the rewards to those who were moat persevering. Mr 'Tanored then wished tho scholars “ A merry Christmas and happy Hew Year,” and after abundant cheering for Mr and Mrs Tanored, Mr Camming, and Mies Britt an, tho school was dismissed for tho holidays. COLOMBO EOAD SCHOOL. The distribution of prizes at this school took place yesterday afternoon at 2 30. There was a good attendance of the friends of tho pupils, and also several members of tho school committee. The Eev. H. B. Cooks presided, and said ho hoped the holidays would be well spent, and that they would come back ready for renewed exertions. He was glad that tho children had done their beet. and it was gratifying to know that the efficiency of the school was all that could be wished. Their friend Mr Joyce would present the prizes, which were not so much a reward of merit as an incentive for future exertions.
Rev. T. R, Cairns bore testimony to the efficiency of the school, and was glad to state tho reports wore so satisfactory. The general working and management of the school loft nothing to be desired. Mr J. E. Andrew made a few appropriate remarks, and wished tho children a “ Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.” Mr Joyce, the Mayor elect of Sydenham, rejoiced to bo with them on this occasion, and hoped that though the Bible was not taught in the school they would not neglect it at home. Ho hoped in time to come some one of the boys h? saw before him would fill tho position be held this day. Ho was glad to say that the Musical Society had assisted them in procuring the prizsa about to bo distributed, and help had also come from other sources, which woil supplemented the small amount they had to expend for that purpose. He was also glad that tho interruption caused by sickness had not caused tho school to go back in efficiency. then addressed a few encouraging remarks to 1 the children, asking them to give three cheers I for Mr Joyce, which were vociferously rondered. Several pieces of vocal music were then rendered very creditably by the children, after which the Rev. H. B. Cooks dismissed the school till January 23rd. KAIAPOI BOEOU3-H SCHOOL. On Wednesday evening an entertainment was given in the Oddfellows’ Hall, in aid of the prize fund. Tho hall was crammed, and the receipts amounted to about £23. Mr E. Parnham, chairman of the committee, presided, and a programme of twenty-five numbers was gone through. The singing of the Misses Monk was received with an ovation, the recitations all showed great care in enunciation, and tho part songs, by tho whole body of about 200 children ranged on the platform, wore very effectively rendered under tho leadership of Mr R. J. Alexander. At the close, on the motion of Mr J. 0. Porter, who expressed bis intention of giving a prize for improvement in writing for next year, a vote of thanks was carried by acclamation to the teachers and those who had given the entertainment.
On Thursday afternoon the prizes, comprising a collection of valuable books, were distributed in the eohools. About sixty ladies and gentlemen wore present. Mr Parnham, chairman of committee, expressed his gratification at seeing so many visitors in excess of former yearn, which seemed an evidence of the interest taken in the success of tho school. He regretted that the task of delivering an address and handing the prizes to the children had, since the decease of a late chairman, who was deeply respected in the town, fallen on him. Ho then referred to the plan adopted in the awarding of the prizes, and proceeded to hand them to tbe scholars, each recipient rece.ving a cheer from the assembled school.
