THE ELECTIONS.
COLERIDGE. The nomination for this district was held at Sheffield on Saturday, Captain O. G. Parker officiating as Returning Officer. The weather was very wet, and there wore only thirty electors present. The proceedings were of a most orderly character, and occupied leas than half-an-hour. The Returning Officer, after reading the writ, asked some person to nominate a candidate. Mr W. Rossiter, Sheffield, proposed Mr David McMillan as a fit person to represent the district, and stated that Mr McMillan had served them in several capacities, and that he now looked to them for promotion. He was too well known to the persons present to require any eulogy from him, and be had great pleasure in proposing him. Mr Adams, Greendale, seconded Mr McMillan’s nomination.
Mr Williamson, Springfield, said he had great pleasure in proposing Mr J. D. Enys. He was well known in the district, and he had no doubt that, if returned, Mr Enys would serve them well.
Mr E. Benham, of Kowai Pass, briefly seconded Mr Eny’s nomination. Mr J. Rutledge said that in proposing Mr J. Jebson, sen., he felt confident that he was proposing a man of great experience and ability, and be was well fitted to represent them. Should any difficulties arise, Mr Jebson was well able to grapple with them. Mr W. Lily, Sheffield, seconded Mr Jebson’s nomination. Tho Returning Officer after asking whether there were any other candidates, called for a show of bands, which resulted as follows : McMillan 8 J. D. Enys ... ... ... 2 J, Jabson... ... ... ... 10 Mr Rossiter demanded a poll on behalf of Mr McMillan. Mr Enys said that ha did not intend to make a speech, as he considered that it was contrary to the ballot. Nominations had been done away with in England, and he considered it a good precedent for this country; but he did not wish to interfere with Messrs McMillan and Jebson addressing them. The Returning Officer said it was hardly necessary for them to make speeches, as they had been all over tho district. There might, however, be a few things that they had omitted to mention which they might like to speak about. Mr Jebson said it had been particularly reserved in the Act that candidates could address the electors at the nomination, but he would not keep them long. The election for this district had so far been conducted without personalities, and for his part he meant to adhere to that. But it might have been as well for the candidates to have had an interchange of ideas. He was not in favor of the plurality of votes, but was in favor of local option. He begged to return thanks to the returning officer for the duties be had discharged. £ Applause. J Mr Enys seconded the resolution, which was carried amid applause. ASHBURiON. On Saturday, at noon, about fifty people met in the Ashburton Court House for the nomination of Mr E. Q. Wright, who was proposed by Mr John Orr and seconded by Dr. Trevor. Mr W. Martin, Returning Officer, then declared Mr Wright duly elected without opposition. Mr Wright spoke of the high compliment which had been paid him of being returned without opposition, and attributed the fact not to any ability of his, but to the circumstance that he had always sought to promote the welfare of tho whole district, and iad not advocated individual class interests. He reminded his hearers of the importance of their district, which exported a quarter of the grain exportation of the colony, and attributed any influence he bad been able to exercise to the fact of his having had so important a constituency at his back. He did not think New Zealand need have any fear of competition arising from the American grain trade. [Applause.] The proceedings concluded with a vote of thanks proposed to the Returning Officer by Mr Wright. SEFXON.
Mr Saunders addressed a well attended meeting in the Town Hall on Friday evening. Mr Yaughan was voted to tho chair, Mr Saunders replied satisfactorily to several anonymous letters, and took the Returning Officer at Amberley somewhat to task for Thursday’s proceedings. Mr A. McDonald proposed a vote of thanks. Mr Barclay objected that the proposer was not a Sefton resident, and ha proposed the vote, which was seconded by two other electors and unanimously agreed to. BROADFIELD, Sir A. P. O’Oallsghan, one of the candidates for tho representation of Lincoln electoral district, addressed a meeting of the electors at the Broadfield School on Friday evening last. Mr John Maginnesa was voted to the chair, Mr O’Oallaghan very fully explained his views upon tho chief political topics of the day, and his address, which was a returns of those he had previously delivered at other places in the district, was listened to by a very attentive and numerous body of the electors. Mr O’Oallaghan very satisfactorily answered a number of questions put to him by several electors. A hearty vote of thanks to the candidate was proposed by Mr R. Aitken, and seconded by Mr J. Haydon, and carried with acclamations. Mr O’Jallaghan thanked the meeting for the vote of thank?, and expressed himself content to leave a vote of confidence to the ballot.
