DUNEDIN SPRING RACES. (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.] DUNEDIN, November 29. Tho Dunedin Spring meeting commenced to-day. Tho weather was lovely, but the attendance was rather small, probably 2000 being present. Tho racing on the whole was good and interesting, the favorites winning in each case. The betting was very limited, and most ©f the business was done on the totalisator. Considerable improvements have been made on the course, which is now pretty level, and all tho arrangements to-day were excellent. Just before the start for the St. Andrews Handicap Tasman launched out and struck Webster, who was riding Volunteer, on tho leg. Webster had to dismount, but took his place again in five minutes, and was greeted with cheers. Handicap Hurdle Race—3s sots, second horse to receive 5 sova from the stakes. One mile and a half, seven flights of bnrdles 3ft Gin high. Mr Butler’s Agent, 12at 131 b ... (T. Lyford) 1 Mr Proudfoot’s Isaac, lOst ... (Q. McCoy) 2 Mr Christie’s Katerfelto, lOst 3
Trovatore (Bst 71b) and Putative (Bst 71b) also started.
Trovatore and Isaac were away quickest, and led over the first hurdle, in clearing which Trovatore went into the ditch, and thus lost a lot of ground. Katorfelto went on second, with Agent third, and Putative fourth. On reaching the stand Isaac was still in front, but Agent had got up seco d within three lengths of him, with Katerfelto third, Putative still fourth, and Trovatore making up lee way. The last-named, however, ran round the stand hurdle, and again fell far behind. A little before a mile had been covered Agent began to creep up on Isaac, and shortly after darted past him as though he were standing still, the favourite entering the straight with a clear lead. Isaac appeared to come under the whip, but it was soon evident that The Agent was merely playing with him, for the favourite came away and won hands down by a length. Katerfelto was a bad third, while Trovatore and Putative were very uselessly ridden out a quarter of a mile behind for the barren honour of fourth place. Time—3min. 15sec, Of £399 in the totalisators £l9B was on The Agent. Maiden Plate, 40 sovs; one mile and quarter; w.f.a. Messrs Mason and Yallance’s Rawdon (J. Webster) 1 Mr Stephenson’s Eugenie ... (Whybrow) 2 Mr Kirby’s Mameluke... ... (J. Cotton) 3 The flag fell to a fair start, Mameluke getting a slight advantage and cutting out the running, followed by Eugenie and Teviot, with Rawdon fourth, the rest all together as they raced past the stand. These positions were not materially altered till reaching the far side of the course. Then Rawdon was let out, and passing Teviot, he took a feel at the leading pair, but was pulled back again till entering the straight, when he got on terms with Mameluke and Eugenie, and a pretty looking race home took place. Rawdon, however, had the foot of the others, and nearing the stand he shot out and came in a winner with a lot in hand by three-quarters of a length. Mameluke and Eugenie made a dead heat for second place, having run a rattling race together. Teviot was fourth. Time, 2min. 25seo. Of £347 in the totalieator, £lll was on the winner. St. Andrew’s Handicap, ICO sovs ; two miles. Mr Goodman’s Chancellor, Sat 91b (Thompson) 1 Mr Kirby’s Adamant. 7st 51b ... (Bowie) 2 Messrs Mason and Yallanoe’s Volunteer, Bat 61b 3 Tasman, 6st 131 b; Legerdemain, 6st 91b, also started. There were two or three breaks away, and some delay by Tasman launching out and kicking Webster on Volunteer. When the flag eventually fell Volunteer got the best of it, and Chancellor much the worst. Volunteer led round the turn, with Adamant in close attendance, the pair having a clear gap between them and the rest. Thompson did not keep Chancellor long in the background, for before they had gone half a mile he had got up into third place, and within a couple of lengths of Adamant. By the time the stand was reached, and a mile covered, Volunteer and Adamant were in the van side by side, four lengths ahead of Chancellor, who in turn headed Tasman and Legerdemain by a considerable distance. The leading pair held their positions till the back of the course, when Chancellor went up with a rush, and Adamant simultaneously falling back, Mr Goodman’s horse got on terms with Volunteer, and in a few strides further was a length in front of him. Approaching the straight run in Chancellor appeared to have things all his own way, but Volunteer came again, and as Adamant followed suit, and Tasman here also made bis effort, a great struggle appeared to be pending. Half way up the straight, however, the whips wore out to all but Chancellor, who came away full of running, and won a very interesting race by fully two lengths ; Adamant wa s second, half a length ahead of Volunteer, Tasman fourth, Legerdemain last. Time, 3 min. 47seo. Of £403 in the totalieator £l7O was on Chancellor. Handicap Time Trot, of 50 sovs; three miles. Mr Hamilton’s Peggy, 32sec -. (Owner) 1 Mr Fairley’s Bella, 22seo 2 Mr Anderson’s Billiard Ball, 40aec 3 Seven others started. Peggy, who broke away once, won all the way. The totalisator dividend inside was £2 5s fid, outside £1 15s. Spring Handicap, of 50 sovs ; ono mile and a distance.
Mr Cutts’ Nautilus, 7st 41b (T. Thompson) 1 Mr Williams’ Talent, Bst 21b ... (K. Derritt) 2
The race was reduced to a match between the two. Talent got the best of the start. At the back of the course Nautilus went up, and coming into the straight they were neck and neck; but once round the corner Nautilus went ahead and won easily. Time, 2min. 4iaeo. The totalisator dividend was £1 Bs. UaNBTOLBHT Ecubet; post entry ; one mile. Swagsman 1 Bomanca 2
