[By Tblkqbaph.] [Per s.s. To Anau, at tho Bluff.] MELBOURNE, November 22, There are now two vacant seats in tho Assembly, caused by tho resignation of Mr Yale for Bitzroy and tbo death of Mr R. De Bruce Johnston tbo member for Geelong. Mr Johnston was seized with an apoplectic fit, and after remaining unconscious for three days expired. The dates of tho now olootions are yet unfixed. There was a very heavy rainfall all day on Sunday and up till Monday morning, during which time two inches fell.
John Sergeant, for assaulting Mr Munro, was committed for trial. The evidence given at tho Police Court was similar to that previously furnished. Tho prisoner had acted like a madman. Ho laid about him in Mr Munro’s drawing-room with a large brass picture rod, doing damage which amounted to over £3OO. In Court he conducted himself in a manner unlike a sane man. Tho bench declined to reduce tho heavy bail, as Mr Munro was in fear of his life.
A box containing valuable documents belonging to Professor Rouleaux, the German Commissioner to tho Exhibition, is missing. It contains all the vouchers for the money expended by the German Commissioner in Melbourne, and its non-appearance has caused uneasiness amongst the authorities in Germany. Tho box, which was shipped by tbo Khedive in May last, was insured for £250 in tho South British Company of Now Zealand. A valuable gold [chain and locket were prorented to Captain Carey by the deck officers and engineers of tho Te Anau on arrival of tho steamer.
Considerable dissatisfaction is felt at the Cricket Association charging tho English Eleven 10 per cent, for their patronage, and a number of prominent players have intimated their intention of playing independent of tho association.
SYDNEY, November 22. The declared value of the imports and exports show a very large increase over last year. By a boating accident at Sandgate, Queensland, four lives wore lost. Tho boat overturned, and of a party of five four were drowned. The survivor, who was rescued, was so exhausted that he is not expected to recover.
Mr Baker, a late member of the Assembly, addressed tho electors at Oarooar on Saturday. His explanation appeared to satisfy those present, who passed a vote of confidence.
