Frederiok Plummer, notorious in consequence of the daring burglaries committed by him some years ago in Auckland and Dunedin, was arrested to-day under the Vagrant Aot. The police suspect him of the recent burglaries here. His house was rigidly searohed this afternoon by the police, and the ground dug up in places, but no plant was discovered. Volunteer Pay. A deputation from the Thames Volunteers, consisting of Captains Wildman and Sohoofield, waited on the Hon. Mr Whitaker re the dispute concerning pay. Mr Whitaker seemed to regard their case favorably, and promised to telegraph at once to Wellington. CompensationThe Loan and Mercantile Company have givon £l5O to the widow of George Brown, who was killed by falling through their verandah skylight. WELLINGTON, November 23. New Steam Collier-
The screw steamer Kangaroo, Captain Campbell, arrived here to-day from Adelaide, after a passage of ten and a-half days. She brings a cargo of flour. The Kangaroo comes down under charter to the Westport Colliery Company to run in the coal trade. Captain Williams, of the Westport, is said to have two more steamers building in the Clyde for this trade. Appeal Court. The Court of Appeal to-day was occupied with the argumont in the demurrer removed" in the case Brogden and Co. v the Queen. GREYMOUTH,. November 23. The County Council. Mr Arthur R. Guinness was re elected today for the sixth time chairman of the County Council. OAMARU, November 23. Mr D. Sutherland was to-day re-elected chairman of the County Council. Breach of By-laws. John Halkett was charged to-day at the R.M. Court will illegally discharging firearms within 50ft of a street contrary to the statute. In evidenoe it appeared that there was a row at Reidston, and several witnesses swore that accused had discharged a pistol, but with what iutent was not dearly brought out. Rebutting evidonce was given, and the accused was dismissed. The Licensing Regulation. A hotelkeeper was to-day charged with permitting a drunken man to remain on his premises. Four informations were laid, two under the old ordinance and two under the Act of last session. The question of the Act being in force was raised, and, after argument, the police agreed to proceed on one under the old ordinance. After hearing evidenoe, the R. M. inflicted a fine of 20s, with 7s costs.
DUNEDIN, November 23. Thß Premier. The Premier is expected to arrive here on Saturday. Over-Cautious. A deputation waited on the Colonial Secretary to ask the use of the immigration barracks as a fever hospital. Mr Dick said that ho could not see his way to grant it, in case of germs of disoaee being left in the building. Chinese Gamblers. Four Chinamen wore oharged at the Police Court with keeping a gambling house where fan tan was played. One was fined £5 and £2 on two charges. The case against the others was dismissed. Mr Johnston goes uway in a day or two for a similar purpose. AKABOA, November 23. At a meeting of the Akaroa County Council held to-day, Mr T, S. Baker was elected chair man.
