The Mauaponri, the now large steamer of the Union Company, will leave home a month later than was expected, and is now due here in February next. THE S.S. HAWEA. This favorite coasting steamer in the Union Company’s fleet arrived yesterday from Dunedin after a lengthy absence. A good number of Captain Kennedy’s friends were down on the wharf to meet him, and welcome his return again in command of his well appointed and handsome steamer. The Hawea might very well have been mistaken yesterday for a new steamboat, but a few hours out of the finishers’ hands. All her passenger room forward and aft certainly could not be excelled for appearance of comfort, real cleanliness, and sweetness. Daring her stay at Dunedin she had been put through the renewera’ hands, and the overhaul she has received has been executed in a manner at once creditable to the mechanics of the Port and to the superintendent of the Union Company. The up run from Dunedin was made in 161 hours yesterday against a head wind, and Captain Kennedy is satisfied that the speed of the vessel will fully reach an average of twelve knots right along the coast. When the vessel left the dock at Port Chalmers an excursion trip was made, an extract from the account of which, as given in the Dunedin papers, is here appended. “ The Hawea left the George street pier at 130 p.m., and at 1.35 p.m. went full-speed ahead against the full tide, steaming gallantly down the harbor at the rate of nearly 11V knots at the start. She passed the lightship at 1.57 p.m., the engines making 75 revolutions a minute, with a pressure of 581 bof steam. The heads were soon gained, and the bar crossed ; and although there was a very heavy S.B. sea on, the Hawea made good weather of it, and proceeded to Cape Saunders, ■which she breasted at 2.45 p.m., having covered the distance from Port Chalmers in the space of Ih 15m, and behaving admirably throughout the run.” The Hawea left for the North at 6.20 p.m. yesterday.
