Ekbident Magistbatb’s Coup.t. —At the Resident Magistrate’s Court this morning, before G-. L. Hellish, Esq , 8.M., an unruly apprentice was brought up, and, after receiving an admonition from the Magistrate, his case was allowed to be withdrawn. J. J. iDowey, who had allowed his payments on account of the maintenance of his children at Burnham to go in arrear, was ordered to pay up in future, the matter ti stand over till January 2nd, 1892, when defendant would receive some money as pension. A similar case against Jos. Cummings was adjourned till November 28th. 'lntercolonial Weather Exchange.— Sydney, Tuesday evening.—The depression has slight increased off Tasmania. Barometer very low, but fine weather and light winds prevail from N.W. to W. Barometer— Portland, 19 8 ; Hobart, 29 6 ; Sydney, 29.8. Lyttelton Magistrate's Const. —Two seafaring men were brought before this Court this morning charged with committing a breach of the peace in view of a constable, namely, by fighting on Norwich Quay, Both admitted the charge and were fined 10s each.
Lyttelton Cricket Club. —At a committee meeting of the above club, held on Tuesday night at Port, the secretary was instructed to send challenges to the following ; —Addington (Ist eleven), Midland (2nd eleven), Lancaster Park (junior), Sunnyeide, and Bailway Clubs. The return match with the Lancaster Park second eleven will take place shortly. Gaiety Theatre. —Mr, Mrs, and Miss Hart, assisted by Mr W. Kerby, appeared again at the Gaiety Theatre last night in a very attractive programme. Miss Louise Hart played a brilliant fantasia on “ Buie Britannia ” with much success, receiving loud applause. The introduced songs of Mr and Mrs Hart and Mr Kerby were well received, and the latter gentleman bad to repeat his topical song twice. The company appear again this evening. Mb Eolleston —Public business alone has prevented Mr Bolleston visiting Canterbury, and addressing the electors af the Avon district, but we understand he will do so immediately after Mr Hall’s return to Wellington, Ashburton Mayobalty. — A requisition, largely and influentially signed, has been presented to Councillor D. Williamson, asking him to stand for the mayoralty for the ensuing municipal year. Ashburton — Tinwald Bridge. —A number of escape-ways have been constructed at convenient intervals along this bridge, so that pedestrians may be able readily to avoid coming in contact with travelling mobs of ■heep or cattle. The Fbbnqlbn. — We have information that the New Zealand Shipping Company Limited were not the charterer* of the ship ■ Fernglen on the voyage to Oregon, which terminated so unfortunately for) that ship recently, as stated in the telegram published in our columns on Monday last. Abhbubton Cheese and Butter Facioby. —On Monday evening Mr Bowron lectured in the Ashburton Town Hall on the advisableness of establishing a local cheese and butter factory. Mr Joseph Clark was voted to the chair. The lecturer, who has had varied experience in England, the Continent of Europe, and the United States, received a vote of thanks by acclamation, and the meeting terminated with the usual compliment to the chair. St. Albans Election. —Mr J. Evans Brown addressed a meeting of the electors of St. Albans last night at Moore's shed near the Addington railway station. There was a fair attendance, and the chair was occupied by Mr James Feather. Mr Brown touched upon the different points referred to in his address at Merivale and already reported. After be had replied to several questions, a vote of thanks and confidence, moved by Mr Cooper, was carried unanimously. Ashburton Borough Council.— An ordi. nary meeting was held on Monday evening. Present: The Mayor, and Ors J. Orr, E. Friedlander, A. Harrison, D. Williamson, J. Ivess, and W. Eoberts. The Bank overdraft was stated to be £1735 6s 2d ; rents collected since last meeting, £5 4i ; rates collected, £6 13s ; balance of uncollected rates, £66 9s. Mr Moss, agent for the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency, Ashburton branch, wrote for permission to construct a railway siding from the main line to the company’s leasehold property. The request was granted, the work to be subject to the engineer’s supervision. Accounts amounting to £ll4 16s 3d were passed for payment. Woodend Horticultural Society.—A committee meeting of the above society was held on Monday evening, the Hon. H. B Gresson, president, in the chair. The secretary, Mr O. 8. Howard, stated that special prizes to the amount of nearly £6 had been promised, and that subscriptions to the general fund amounted to about £3O. The spring show having been fixed for the 9th of December it ■was resolved to postpone it to the 15th of that month, owing to the general elections. Some of the gentlemen written to to act as judges being unable to attend, the secretary was instructed to write to others, amongst whom wore Mr J. L. Wilson, of Kaiapoi, and Mr Hobson, of Bangiora. Lincoln Sports. —A large and influential meeting was held at Sluis’ Hotel on Monday evening last, for the purpose of forming a committee for carrying out the sports. Mr E. Townshend was voted to the chair. The treasurer, Mr Doherty, presented the balancesheet, which showed a credit balance in band of £lO 2s lid to carry forward. The balance sheet was received as read. A vote of thanks to the retiring committee and officers was carried by acclamation. It was decided to hold tho sports on Monday, sth January, 1882, the sports to include horse racing as well as athletic sports. A large general committee was appointed, and the following gentlemen were elected a working committee : Messrs J. Tod, E. Townshend, J. Doherty, H. White, D. Beid, D. W. Bartram and F. Townshend. Mr E. Townshend was appointed hon. secretary, and Mr J. Doherty, treasurer; and Messrs Tod, Townshend, Bartram and Beid were appointed to see after a paddock in which to hold the sports, and to report at a future meeting.
Musical Society.—There wai a fairly good attendance of memberi last night, when the practice of “ The Messiah ” was commenced.
Hagley Park Bathing Coumitibh.—A meeting of the above committee was held at the bathing-place on Saturday, the 12th inst., Mr Griffiths presiding. The chairman read an official letter from the Domain Board, accepting the services of the bathing committee, and investing them with the necessary authority to manage the bathing-place. He stated that the Domain Board had very kindly given them permission to use the wood which had been cut down in the adjoining plantation, for the purpose of constructing a diving board, erecting a shed, and otherwise improving the bathing-place. It was decided that] the members of the committee should collect subscriptions forthwith from the bathers and those of the public who desire to encourage bathing, so as to carry out the above improvements as soon as possible. _ To economise, the members of the committee undertook to do the greater part of the work themselves. The chairman reported that he had waited on the engineer of the Drainage Board with reference to two dead dogs which were lying in the river on the Domain side of the bathing-place, and that that gentleman had had the nuisance removed at once. He was requested to sea the engineer re the weeds in the river, which were becoming a nuisance at the bathing-place. The chairman was elected treasurer.
Laundry Company.—A meeting of the shareholders of the Christchurch Steam Laundry will be held at Mr Basks’ office this evening at half-past seven o’clock.
