A GOODY GOODY SOCIETY.

The newly formed Cathedral Union must be a very peculiar body. In this nineteenth century it is refreshing, in one way, to find, even in a Little Pedlingtou way, an attempt to return to the good old exploded notion of clerical exclusiveness and separation from what these persons are fond of calling “ the secular world.” This fearfully and wonderfully constituted body actually declines to allow its solemn discussions to be reported in the “ secular" papers. Europe, no doubt, will be convulsed when this afflicting intelligence is notified to them that the nations must hitherto remain in outer darkness as to the proceedings of the Christchurch Cathedral Union. Surely these quite too too gentlemen have not reflected fully on the step they have taken and the dire consequences arising therefrom ? These vile “ secular ” papers will no doubt teem with letters from “ Constant readers, ’ &c., demanding to have the discussions of this body given to the world. We do not quite understand where these gentlemen draw the line between “ secular ” and “ religions ” papers. Prabably that witty and sparkling production, “ The Church News ” will be regarded by these ultra-starched churchmen, as a “religious” paper. Like its excommunicated “secular” ■ brethren, however, we notice that it is not above the carnal craving for advertisements, nor were the coadjutors of these gentlemen under the name of the Cathedral Guild, averse to collecting subscriptions from the “ secular ” world, and also being obliged for free insertions of advertisements for some lengthened period to the now despised “ secular ” papers. We had hoped that with the advancement and enlightenment of the present day and the freedom from many of the shackles which priestcraft and other blighting influences had thrown round men’s minds that such a state of things as this was impossible. However, it has been left for half a dozen enthusiasts to show to what lengths they can go in illiberally.
