Last night word was brought into Ashburton that the Tinwald and Ashburton bridge was on fire. The local stationmaster and locomotive superintendent went out with the engine and extinguished the flames, which had already got hold on the woodwork. The fire is attributed to the sparks from a passing train.

Alleged False DeclarationMr Beswiok sat in the Ashburton Conrt to-day, and heard a charge against Alfred Weston Worthington, of South Bakaia, for having wilfully made a false declaration in regard to a residential qualification touching his claim for enrolment as an elector in the Wakanui district, contrary to the seventh section of the Registration of Electors Act. Sergeant Felton prosecuted, and Mr Wilding defended. William Kemble, W. H. Zouoh, Henry Fowler, Sergeant Felton and John Ourtis were examined, and the case was adjourned until Thursday, for the evidence of the Registrar as to the district, and for the examination of certain legal definitions.
