LONDON, October 29.
The Yolkeraad in ratifying the Convention entered into between the Boer leader and the British Government, declares that it accepts the Convention in order to avoid bloodshed, and to promote the common welfare of the States of South Africa. The defeat of the Conservatives in the Gorman elections is complete. The progressive party antagonistic to Prince Bismarck have gained twelve seats. In the Roman Catholic Cathedral at Dublin yesterday a pastoral letter by Dr. M'Oabo, Archbishop of Dublin, was read from the pulpit, in which the “ no rents ” cry raised by the Irish National Land League was vigorously denounced. The most rev. prelate contended that to advocate or accept such communistic theories would disgrace any Christian people. Numbers of the congregation left the Cathedral while the pastoral letter was being read. The Gorman Government have conveyed to the Italian Ministry an assurance of the special pleasure with which they regard the visit of the King and Queen of Italy to the Austrian Court. October 31, An important public utterance has been made by the Emperor of Austria in connection with the Eastern question. Regarding the treaty of Berlin, he states that the settlement then arrived at has been carried out to a satisfactory termination, and that one difficulty after another which has arisen has been overcome. He expresses his firm conviction that the peace of Europe is now ensured. A mass meeting of sympathisers with the Irish Land League has been held at Parsons’ Town, situated in King’s County. Several thousand persona attended, and the speeches of the ordinary inflammatory type were delivered. The meeting passed over without any disturbance.
The magistracy of Cork have resolved to aid the Government to the utmost of their power in the suppression of disturbances in their district, and to secure the maintenance of order over 200 Justices have intimated to the
authorities their determination in this reepoct. Mr Thomas Sexton, member for County Sligo, and a prominent member of the Homo Eule party, is seriously ill. His condition is such that his medical advisers have given ud hope, and he is believed to be dving.
