[reuxer’s telegrams.] MELBOURNE, November 5, The Spring Meeting.
At Flemington to-day, the fourth day’s racing of the Yictoria Racing Club’s Spring Meeting was held. The Steeplechase, three miles, was won by Mr J. Cunningham’s Prima Donna, Mr J. Morrison’s Trumpeter 2, Mr N. Webb’s Himalaya 3. Eleven horses started for the race. Piima Donna won easily in 7mins. 4secs. The Canterbury Plate, two and a quarter miles, was won by Mr O. G. Baldock’s Wellington, Mr T. Ivory’s Sweetmeat 2, Mr D. McPherson’s Santa Claus 3. Woodlands and Royal Maid also started. The race concluded with a splendid finish between Wellington and Sweetmeat. Time, 4mins. Sses. The Bank Thief.
Thorpe, late toller of tho Bank of Yictoria, was to-day sentenced to two years’ imprisonment for embezzlement, but was recommended by the jury to mercy on account of the great laxity which had prevailed in tho conduct of tho bank’s business.
