RANGIORA BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The monthly meeting of this Council was held on Friday evening. Present the Mayor (Mr Johnston), Councillor Stephens, Ellis, Ivory, Good, Orothers, Boyd, and Gulliver. —Correspondence was received, read and considered—From Mr O. Murdock, respecting several matters referring to the borough endowment reserve, and also with claim for one month’s rental of reserve in consequence of delay caused by the boundary of section not being surveyed, and tho fencing consequently could not be erected. Or, Ivory proposed and Or. Stephens seconded—“ That the request bo granted.” Carried. The clerk was further instructed to reply to Mr Murdock’s letter, and also to make enquiries respecting the other matters. From Mr A. Rose, with voucher for £2 paid into credit of borough, being transfer of license of Plough Hotel. From the Con-
sular agent of the United States for borough statistics. From the Charitable Aid Board, with cheque for £4 6i. The charitable aid committee hero reported upon oases referred to them to take action upon. Ors. Good and Ellis stated that they had interviewed the parties, and amongst other matters particularly recommended that in two cases the aid they receive be paid in money and not in rations. From Mr O. O. Bowen, acknowledging the receipt of letter from the Rangiora Borough Council, and stating the pleasure that he had in feeling that his efforts for the local and general welfare of the colony had been appreciated in the manner they had. The half-yearly balance-sheet was placed upon the table. The surveyor was instructed to keep men on breaking metal, but was upon the recommendation of the works committee, to keep only two permanent men on road work during the summer months. The matter of the gorso hedges was again brought forward, and the surveyor instructed to compel owners and occupiers to trim same back to boundary linos. Accounts were passed for payment amounting to £53 8s 4d. A long discussion ensued upon the matter of the horse-posts, and it was finally decided that the Council could only allow, according to the Regulations of Council, two posts and cross rail. A single post only must not be permitted. A conversation here arose on the forthcoming eleotion’of a gentleman to occupy the civic seat, and it was unanimously expressed by the councillors, and stated to hove been expressed by many of the burgesses outside, that the present Mayor (Mr J. Johnston) should still continue to act in that capacity, having fulfilled the duties in such a way as gave satisfaction to all.
