THE CATHOLIC VOTE.
To the Editor of the Olobe. Srß, —I have noticed an advertisement in the papers calling upon the Catholic electors not to pledge their votes, as a meeting would be hold shortly. Since the appearance of the advertisement, and the thoughtful proclamation issued by the Roman Catholic Bishop to the faithful, strenous efforts are being made (at what cost 1 cannot say) to obtain the blocs vote of the Catholics in favor of the candidate for South- Christchurch, who recently expounded his Utopian theories upon certain questions at the Oddfellows’ Hall. However, it is not my intention at present to criticise the incoherent utterances and spasmodic opinions of the candidate who professes to be a law reformer and a Eevioc-rat (as some political naturalists would say, is an animal which delights in eating the vitals of any constitution, whether good or bad, and whose only aim in life is to exterminate any thought or actions which are higher and nobler than itself). But undue influences at elections cannot be too strongly condemned. For a candidate should be sufficiently explicit and upright, so as to need no special or secret understanding with any individual elector or body of electors, or else the true principles of the Ballot and Corrupt Practices Acts would be thwarted. Yours, &c., NO CORRUPTION.
