Maclise’s great original painting, “The Spirit of Justice,” and one by Baron Tiesensansen, the German artist. Found Dead. The body fastened to the Eona’s boat, recently found at Kaipara, has been identified as that of Captain Mackenzie, of the Bona. Sacrilegious Rascal . During last night a bottle containing coins and documents was stolen from under the foundation stone of the new Wesleyan Church. Twelve robberies and burglaries have been committed here during the last month. WELLINGTON, November 1. Aid to Charities. A deputation from the City Council interviewed the Colonial Secretary to-day on the subject of maintenance and chari-able aid. After discussion Mr Dick promised a subsidy of £ for £ as from April 1 st. Scarlet Fever. A serious case of scarlet fever, one of the pupils, is reported from the college here. The patient, who has been isolated, is a son of Capt, Colbeok, M.H.E. The Russian Jews. .£4lO has been collected here for the Bussiaa Jewish Belief Fund.

Suspicious.
Abraham and Lewis Moses to-day appeared at the R.M. Court on a charge that they intended to abscond from the colony. They said that they only intended : to visit Dunedin to consult a solicitor. The charge was dismissed, the Bench stating that they must not leave Timarn. They were committed for trial some weeks ago for arson. Not Good Enough. Mr "Richmond Beetham has been offered the Resident Magistracy of Dunedin, but declined it. DUNEDIN, November 1. PoliticalMr Thomas Foster is out for the Peninsula, and Mr John M‘Neil for Dunedin Central. A Test Case. The police intend taking proceedings under the Gaming and Lotteries Act in connection with the use of the totalisator here on the V.H.O. Spring Meeting yesterday. Lunatic Asylum Extension. I understand that tho Resident Magistracy of Dunedin, vacated by tho retirement of ,'rir Simpson, is to bo filled up by tho transfer of Mr Carew, R.M., from Lawrence. Mr Carew’s place will be taken by Mr Nugent Wood. 2.11., now of Ashburton. It is not yet settled who will ha appointed to Ashburton, or who will succeed Mr Shaw at Wellington. Several names are mentioned as probable.
