The Last of the SweepsAbbott’s £IO,OOO Sweep on the Melbourne Cup was drawn last night. The first prize, £ISOO, was won by Messrs Mason and Edgar ; the second prize, £SOO, by the employes of the Auckland Gas Company ; and the third, £4OO, by Mesirs Dickey and Alfred Isaacs. In the second sweep, £3158, the first prize, £6OO, went to Messrs Levinsohn and Young ; the second, £3OO, to Mr Bennett ; and the third, £l5O, to Mr Wales, all of Auckland province. Tho winner, Mason, is a member of the Thames Navals, and went with the Thames contingent to the West Coast. NEW PLYMOUTH, November 1. The Hinemoa. The Hinemoa, with tho Thames Volunteers, arrived in the roadstead at daylight this morning, and a messenger was sent ashore to ascertain if they could bo landed at Opunake. The answer being favourable, the steamer left for that port at ten o’clock. WELLINGTON, November 1. Customs Revenue. The Customs rove -ue for the month was £15,194, as against £l4 994 for the corresponding month last year. KUMAR A, November 1. Miners’ Meeting. A public meeting of miners was held at Dillman’s Town last evening, at which a resolution was passed urging on the Government the necessity of pushing on without delay the construction of the reservoir, for which the sum of £3OOO had been voted ; and also widening the water race to tho sludge channel, as until these works were completed numbers of the claims would remain idle. DUNEDIN, November 1. Better Late than Never. In view of the prevalence of scarlet fever, the City Council have decided to call for applications for health officers.
