DRAINAGE BOARD.

The usual fortnightly moeting of the Ohristohuroh Drainage Board was held yesterday afternoon at the office of the Board, Hereford street, at 2 o'olock. Present—Mr H. J. Tancred (in the chair), Messrs Harman, White and duff. The engineer's report, was read and dealt with.—Mr Harman called attention to the state of tho works on the East belt, in referenoe to whioh complaints were made by the people living in the locality. The engineer was instructed to see that the road was restored to a proper condition as soon as the contractor had completed his operations according to the specification. The following correspondence was read : From the town olerk of the borough of Sydenham, in reference to tho recommendation of the engineer that the drain in Piper's lane be widened to prevent the flooding of Colombo street and the properties of Mr Fisher and others, stating that the Council objected to the widening of the drain, it being already dangerous in consequence of its great depth and the narrowness of the road. They were, moreover, of opinion that an ordinary street side channel would be sufficient. — From Mr B. H. Rhodes, calling attention to the fact that a certain portion of the canal reserve drain had not been deepened for fifteen years, and that the standing water was doing great damage to the surrounding land. —From Mr Alfred Osborne, complaining of the existence of a ditch at the baok of his cottage.—From Mr P. Wynn, informing the Board that in consequence of a dispute between the Board's inspeotor and himself he considered his contraot for clearing the city drains broken.—From the Ricoarton Road Board, requesting the Board to deepen and widen the Styx drain.—Tho correspondence was dealt with in the following manner : The letter from the Town Olerk of Sydenham was ordered to stand over until next meeting. Mr Rhodes' letter was referrod to the engineer for his report, as was also the letter of Mr Osborne. Tho request of the Riocarton Road Board was deferred for consideration with other estimates. Other correspondence of an unimportant nature was read and dealt with. A committee appointed at a former meeting reported at follows : Your committee are not agreed as to whether any allocation for the purpose of laying pipe sewers should be made, but a majority recommend that a sum of .£20,000 ba devoted to this purpose. Mi Harman thought the matter had better be deferred until there was a fuller meeting. He would move that tho report be considered at a special meeting on Monday next.—Mr White thought there was no necessity for a special meeting ; as the member of the com' mittoe who objected to the report, believing that the Board had no power to expend the money, he was prepared to discuss the matter at onco. The motion was agreed to and the discussion adjourned.—lt was reported that the state of the loan account was £289 6s 3d, and the rato account £72 lis 7a. —Mr Lambert waited upon the Board with the view of obtaining drainage works for Barkor street and its neighborhood, whioh he pointed out oould be secured by means of pipes already laid down through Mr Gould's property. It was resolved that the work be undertaken by the Road Board under the supervision of the drainage engineer. This concluded tho business.
