A preliminary trial trip of Mr Harvey Hawkins steam launch took place in the harbor on Thursday evouing. Mr Hawkins purchased, his little Waiwera at 'Wellington, whore she was built by Mr Mills for kis own private steam yacht Her dimensions are 55£t by 10ft, and 7ft depth of hold, with 30 horsepower effective. Her engines are compound, surface condensing, and the vessel was faithfully built of the best steel, no money consideration haying entered into the contract for her construction. Upon the trip referred to she steamed eight and a half knots down the harbor against an opposf g wind, and with wind and tide in her favor steamed ■nine knots and a quarter. She moved like a duck in the water, and was as lively as one would wish. Another trip is to he made when the Waiweniis completely unished, her boilers covered properly in, and the vessel put in what might he termed cap-a-pie order forgetting the maximum of the speed she possesses out of her. The Lake Ontario was cleared yesterday tor Calais in Messrs Eoyse, Stead, and Co. and P. Cunningham and Co.’s liue of vessels. The vessel arrived here on the 11th instant with a cargo, and Jiaa therefore met with excellent despatch at the hands of her agents. Not a moment has been lost in getting her cargo of 1-ICO odd tons of coal landed and putting a like quantity of grain on hoard. It Ja also worthy of note that the Lake Ontario is tho bearer to Calais of the first cargo of Canterbury produce which has over left tho province for that destination, and tho hope may bo expressed that her cargo may prove to bo but tho first instalment •f what will yet become an extensive export trade with tho Continent.
