Honors Conferred The " Gazette " issued yesterday announces that her Majesty has conferred the Companionship of the Order of St. Michael and St. George upon Mr J. Cashel Hoey, secretary to the AgentGeneral for "Victoria in London, and upon Mr J. B. Were and J. C. Berry, of Melbourne.

Foundering of a Steamer. The Dutch steamship Koenig der Nederlander, 2083 tons, encountered a heavy gale on the voyage from Batavia to Amsterdam, and broke her main shaft. Efforts were made to put her under sail, but she proved unmanageable, and foundered shortly afterwards. Tbirtyeight of the passengers and crew saved themselves by boats, and have reached land safely. One hundred and seventyfive, who also left the ship in boats, are still missing. October 22. News is to hand to-day from Ireland stating that, in consequence of the Viceroy's recent proclamation declaring the Land League to be an illegal association, the offices of the organisation in Dublin have been closed, and that at the same time a manifesto was issned by the League leaders adjuring their adherents to maintain a firm attitude, and to continue a passive resistance to the measures of the Government. The manifesto further announces that all pubic meetings under the League's auspices will be temporarily abandoned.
