Legal* The case of Mrs Maofarlane v the trustees in Captain Reid's estate has been adjourned, to give the petitioner time to answer serious allegations made by the trustees against the management by the late Mr J. S. Maofarlane. WANGANUI, October 20. The A. & P. ShowThe Agricultural and Pastoral Association Show, held to-day, was very suocetwful. The weather was beautiful, and there was a large attendance. The RacesThe Jockey Club's Spring Meeting takes place to-morrow. Everything indicates on enjoyable day's sport. WELLINGTON, October 20. Ministerial. Major Atkinson and Mr Rolleaton have for the present postponed their intended visit to the West Coast.
Explanation. In reply to a letter from the Artillery, complaining of Colonel Reader's conduct in connection with the offer of the battery to go to the front, the Defence Minister states that the Lieutenant in command must have been under a misapprehension, and that Colonel Reader did not intend to cast any rejection on the battery. Sir Arthur's Sudden Return. It is understood that the hurried return of Sir A. Gordon was owing to despatches he received by steamer arriving at Lerufca from either Brisbane or Cooktown. The ICew Zealand Government were not aware of any despatches having been forwarded. TIMARU, Ootober 20. The A. & P. Show. The total number of entries for the forth-
coming agricultural show is 830, being a large increase over the previous years. DUNEDIN, October 20. Sudden Death. Walter Edward Bishop, a bailiff, foil down dead this morning in the street. He used to be beadle in the Arcade. It is believed that he died from heart disease. A Wise Suggestion. The Law Society have telegraphed to the Government, urging that a gentleman trained to the law should be appointed R.M. here in Mr Simpson's stead. INVEROARGILL, October 20. Turning on their Pastor and Master. A petition addressed to tho Presbytery is being circulated in this district praying for an inquiry into oertain recent utterances by Professor Salmond on the character of a Church. The petitioners oonsider these utterances a violation of his ordination vows, and a proof that he is unfit longer for the theological chair he fills in connection with the Church of Otago and Southland.
