TBr Tblbsbaph.] [FBOM THE OWN OOBBEBPONDBNT THE OP " PBBBB."J WELLINGTON, October 20 Mr Bryeo started at four this morning for the West Coast overland by coach, taking with him the proclamation, and all needful power to aot. Mr Rolloston follows, and will 00-operate with Mr Bryoe on the Coast. I am in a position to state that for some time past Mr Bolleston has been aoting in entire concert with Mr Bryce, who warmly approves of tho steps taken, and will follow in the same course, excepting that as events develope themselves it will necessarily be modified accordingly. Means will be found of communicating toTe Whiti the contents and purport of the proclamation in a clear and unmißtakeable way. "Upon his subsequent action the result must neoessarily depend. I telegraphed last night that the Govern ment had ordered the constabulary to proteot tho settlers near Cape Egmont from any renewed interference on tho part of the Maoris, but up to the time I am writing this no intimation of any fresh attempt has been received.
Sir A. Gordon landed at 9 a.m., and I hear that a meeting of the Executive Council was hurriedly oonvened for 11 a.m., the result of which has not transpired. It was instantly followed by a long meeting of the Cabinet, regarding which reticence is observed. It is currently reported, however, that Sir A. Gordon is exceedingly wrath at the steps taken, and that his relations with Ministers are greatly " strained "in oonsequenoe. The Government, however, seem fully determined to press on their policy, and the sympathy of the publio here unquestionably is unanimously with them. Even some of their bitterest opponents have expressed to lae their cordial approval and hearty support of the last proceeding on the part of the Government. There is an absolute consensus of opinion that the Government have adopted a thoroughly right and proper course in taking up the resolute and.unflinohing attitude now assumed, and that forbearance has been carried to its utmost limit.
