The report of the business transacted by the ohairman since last meeting was approved. —A letter was read from the committee of the West Ohristohurch sohool on the subjeot of the application of oertain ministers to visit the schools. The oommittee stated that they objected to olergymen attending the school, either before or after school hours. —The inspector's report on the Bpreydon school was read and considered.—An application was received to have a new school district constituted at Bingsland. The East Ohristchurch distriot offering no objection, it was decided that the neoessary steps be taken to constitute the new district. —On the motion of Mr Montgomery, Messrs J. B. Garwood and W. B. Tosswill were appointed members of the Akaroa High School Board, and Messrs A. H. Cunningham and H. Blaokatt members of the Rangiora High School Board.—A deputation from the West Ohristohurch school committee, consisting of Professor Bickerton and Mr Beece, waited upon the Board in connection with the following resolution passed on the previous evening by the committee : " That in the opinion of this oommittee the new scale of salaries is such as is likely to prove most disastrous in its effects to the efficiency of the large town schools, because the remuneration is not adequate to the responsibility of the position." Professor Bickerton urged reasons in support of the resolution, and pointed out that the new scale of salarios, if carried out, would prove prejudicial to the oauße of education generally. He compared the salaries paid to the teachers of the large town schools in Ohristohurch with those which obtained in Dunedin, showing a difference largely in favor of the latter place. Mr Beece also spoke on the subject of the teachers' salaries, remarking that in Otago the teachers in the large schools were encouragod to inorease the number of pupils by receiving extra remuneration for every additional fifty pupils, while here such was not the case. The deputation having promisod to send in to the Board before its next meeting a written statement embodying the facts they had stated, withdrew. The seal of the Board w»a affixed to a number of pupil teachers' agreements. A recommendation from the ABhburton School Committee to appoint Miss Seager as infant mistreßS of the school, subject to her obtaining a certificate at the next examination, was agreed to.—A letter from the Sydenham school committee, complaining of the new scale of salaries, was ordered to be considered in connection with a similar application from the West Christchurch oommittee. referenoe to an application from the Little Biver sohool committee to have the sohool grounds enlarged, that the sum of £BO be offered for the purchase of the additional land required. An application from the same committee that the Board should defray the cost of planting and fencing the grounds was refused.—Reports on small repairs required for school buildings were received and discussed engtk. Mr Webb suggested that
it was hardly the duty of the Board to go into all these trivial matters. Would it not be better to relegate them to the school committees ? The Chairman thought that matters involving the expenditure of money required to be dealt with with great discretion, and ho doubted the expediency of leaving them to the school committees.—The Board thon went into committee, and on resuming adjourned.
