AQUATIC.
The opening of the boating season at Kaiapoi took place on Saturday last, and consisted of a procession of boats belonging to the Cure Olub, down and up the river. The van was led by the sculling boats Weka and Makomako, and the rear brought up by the pair-oar Cure and four-oar Cam and a flotilla of smaller oraft. There was a large assemblage of boating men and others to witness the turn-out. The officers of the olub for the ensuing year are President, Mr G. H. Wearing; vice-president, Mr J. Lowthian Wilson j captain, Mr J. Winterbourne; custodian, Mr J. Perrin 5 secretary, Mr Frank Weston. It has been decided to put the landing stage in order, and arrange for the regular practices. After the opening ceremony a match was rowed in double sculling boats, between G. Wright and O. Smith and B. Day and J. Perrin, the former pair winning a half-mile race by a short bow. The next event, between A. Winterbourne and J. Bowen, and J. Smith and B. Baloh, was won by the first named men by a length. A single scullers’ race, between G. W. Wearing and G. Spillan, was won by the former easily. Seversl other events were got off during the afternoon. On Saturday afternoon the Lyttelton Bowing Olub, the membership of which now numbers between fifty and sixty, opened the season in the orthodox way, by forming a procession of boats. The Mayor of the town took part in the ceremony, at the conclusion of which several scratch races were pulled off.
