[PEE PEBB3 ASSOCIATION.] NEW PLYMOUTH, October 6. The Native Question. With reference to the Natives selling their cattle and goods at a sacrifice, the “ Herald” gives an instance of J. Dingle, of New Plymouth, who bought twenty head of largo cattle from the Natives for £4O, or £2 per head. For full grown cattle again, Captain Martyn, of Mania, and Mr Humphrey Bayley bought seventy horses from the Natives for £SO. They have sold a building formerly used as a Maori chapel, ploughs, and other things to raise money. The s s, Ini. The steamer Tui, which went ashore at Waitara, has been repaired, and left for Wellington th>s morning. New Steamer. Captain Bendall was on board the new steamer MacGregor, which arrived at Waitara this morning. WELLINGTON, October 6. Criminal. At the Supreme Court to-day, W. Hayes was sentenced to five years for rape, and James Qofney received seven years for sodomy. P.AIEA, October 6. Political. Mr George Hutchison, a candidate for Egmont, addressed a crowded meeting here last night. He said ho would support a want of confidence motion in the Government, if proposed by Mr Ormond, providing the reestablishment of provincialism was not contemplated. A vote of confidence in Mr Hutchison was carried by 11 to 2. KUMAR A, October 6, PoliticalMr B, J. Seddon announces himself as a candidate for Kumara at the coming election. DUNEDIN. October 6. ResignationThe Bov. J. Upton Davis has resigned the pastorate of the Hanover street Baptist Church. Ho retires altogether from the pulpit. Libel Case The case against Mr Allan, seedsman, for an alleged libel on Mr Massey is occupying the Court to-day. Tbe Embezzler Moritzon. Moritzon, convicted of embezzlement, has been sentenced to a year’a imprisonment, after the expiration of the present sentence. [fbom oub own oobbbbpondbnt.] ASHBURTON, October 6. SportingThere were about 300 persons present at the Hunt Club Steeplechase to-day. The full complement of five horses started for the Hunt Club Cup, which was won easily by Whynot, with Lonehand second, and Mango Park third. It was a good race the greater part of the distance. For the Maiden Steeple, chase, Cloud, Glengarry, Butterfly, and Lathalien started. This was a capital race, and was won by Cloud by two and a half lengths, with Glengarry second, and Butterfly third. Maid of the Mill and Kitty started for the Farmers’ Steeplechase. Both baulked repeatedly at the second fence, causing much amusement. The Maid got over first, followed presently by K tty, and all the subsequent fences were topped without trouble. The Maid gradually drew ahead, and coming down the straight won easily hands down. The Maid received a nasty skin wound in front of her near fore cannon bone.
