Brown, formerly a Baptist minister, but recently connected with the " Herald " staff, died this morning. NAPIER, Ootober3. PoliticalMr Sutton addressed his old constituent at Napier to-day. He stands for the Hawke's Bay seat, but gave this as a sort of valedictory address. He went almost wholly with the Ministsrial policy, and was decidedly rough on Mr Ormond and his old colleague, Oapt. Russell. At the conclusion of the meeting a motion was passed according a vote of thanks to Mr Sutton for his address, and expressing regret that the late members for the Napier electorate had found it necessary to oppose one another instead of each standing for one of the electorates. Mr Ormond will address the electors of Waipawa as soon as the writs are out. WANOANUI, Ootober 3. Mr Thomas Bamber is announced as a candidate for the Wanganui seat. WELLINGTON, Ootober 3. He concludes by saying that as private affairs requiring his temporary absence from the colony will probably prevent his return in time to attend at the meeting of next Parliament, it is not his intention to offer himself as a candidate at the approaching election. Mr R. O. Reed announces himself as a candidate for re election for Hokitika district. DUNEDIN, October 3. Whaling Success. News from the whaler Splendid, now at the Friendly Islands, says she has taken fourteen humpbacks in less than five weeks. PoliticalMr Oliver is likely to stand for Roslyr, also Mr Bathgate. Fire. A three-roomed oottage at Oaversham was burned down this morning. It was insured in the Standard for £2OO. The Gaming Bill. The Colonial Seoretary, who arrived here on Saturday, has stated, in answer to enquiries, that the Gaming and Lotteries Bill cornea into force on November Ist, not January, as is generally believed. . The Projected ExhibitionWith reference to the Adelaide telegram re t ho Government promising to support Messrs Joubert and Twopenny's exhibition, the Colonial Secretary has received a telegram from the Premier stating that all the Government promised was to make the exhibition building, in whatever city selected, a bonded store.
