Singular Cause of DeathThomas Douglas, aged seventy, accidentally fell down in the Drury Saleyards and died shortly afterwards. The medical examination showed that death resulted from inflammation, owing to his body being over fat, internally and externally. TAURANGA, September 28. Political. A meeting was held to-day for the purpose of getting up a requisition to the Hon. John Hall to stand for this district, Mr Yesey Stewart agreeing not to come forward if Mr Hall elects to stand. A requiiition is also being signed asking Mr Sheehan to come forward. WELLINGTON, September 28. Mr Wm. France, formerly of the Customs department, is a candidate for the Foxton seat at the forthcoming election. MinisterialThe Colonial Secretary left for the South by the Albion this evening. He will stay in Christchurch for a couple days, with a view of inspecting several institutions there. The Premier leaves for the South in the Hinemoa to-morrow. Property Value in Wellington. A property in Willis street changed hands yesterday, the price being an average of £75 per foot. Adulterating. Informations have been laid against three publicans who are alleged to have adulterated spirits with water to the extent of between 20 and 50 per cent. Sporting. At the Boeing Club meeting to-night, the members adopted revised rules tending to uniformity with other clubs. Xho stewards have arranged a programme for the annual meeting, and the chief alterations from last year are that the Cup is raised from £4OO to £600; the Ladies’ Purse has been abolished, and replaced by the Railway Stakes Handicap, three-quarters of a mile, of £SO. The Hutt Park Stakes have been raised from £75 to £IOO, and the other races have also been added to. HOKITIKA, September 28. CrimeIn the Supreme Court, the charge of murder against David Charles McGahey was resumed this morning. The case concluded at three o’clock, and after a retirement of an hour and a half the jury returned a verdict of acquittal, and the prisoner was discharged. The civil business commences at ten o’clock to-morrow. OAMARU, September 28. In the District Court to-day, Marshall Simmonds was charged with criminally assaulting his daughter, a child under twelve years of age. The ease was dismissed, as there was no evidence to show that the girl present was the child assaulted by the accused. The witnesses had neglected to give evidence to the police till some twelve days after the occurrence. His Honor, in dismissing the accused, said he escaped through a mere technicality, but ho had no doubt he was a great scoundrel. DUNEDIN, September 28. Body Found. The body of Kearns, mate of the Mary Ogilvie, who was drowned in going off to the vessel about three weeks ago, was found today underneath the wharf.
