THE NEW ZEALAND STUD BOOK.

By Bihbad. The seventh volume of the Stud Book has made its appearance, is well got up, and will I trust find a very successful sale. It is a volume no New Zealand sportsman should be without. In his preface Hr Elliott thankfully acknowledges the assistance ho has received from many people interested in the success of such a useful publication ; others, however, although the editor informs us that he frequently wrote to them for returns, took no notice of his letters; and, consequently, the mares do not appear in this volume, nor never should they again in any future one if I wore tho editor. It is a wonder, and always has been ao to me, why men possessing valuabble mares should neglect to supply every information in their power to the editor of this volume. One comfort is, they only act thus to their own detriment. There’s nothing to pay for insertion, so it does not touch their precious pockets. A two-penny stamp is tho whole cost. In looking over the pages of tho “ Stud Bock” I find frequent mention of mares imported from Australia without pedigree. Many others again are supposed to be thoroughbred. I think in future volumes it would be advisable to leave these ladies out altogether.as a Stud Book should be tabooed to all but real thoroughbreds, and the breeding of such ones is increasing so fast here now that the Editor is quite in a position to dispense with the ancient records of half-bred mares, ■who never threw anything batter than weedy hacks. Tho birth of many of them being also recorded in tho Stud Book. A very interesting part of tho book is that giving the pedigrees of the mares and horses that have been imported from Australia within the last three years. While on the last poge, under the heading “Notes to Pedigree,” some very very valuable information is afforded. I notice amongst the tabulated pedigrees several new ones, of whose existence I must confess I was previously totally unaware, and I dare say had all tho recent importations been inserted the number would have astonished a good many readers.
