THE WELCOME STAKES CANDIDATES.
By Sinbad. The particular intereet which is attached to the first two-vcar-old race of the year is my only excuse for writing about this event. There ore a great number in work for it, but these youngetors, though some seem pretty forward, ore not yet sufficiently advanced to form anv opinion of their capabilities. The Baupo colt should, if ho start, run very well but ho has thrown a slight curb, which will, I fanev, perhaps interfere with his preparation, and he is too valuable a colt to persevere with as a twovear-old should it turn out troublo, omc. I don't think either Aroma, the Albany—Tell Tale filly, or the Anteros— Sludge filly are in work, but another Enfield filly is—l mean Nonsense, by Albany, out of No Name, who is a very good looking young ladv, a nice mover, and oomss of a speedy family. I don’t fancy we shall be favored with any of Me Farmer’s three original nominations, though the gelding by Patriarch, out of Hatred, should bo a good sort. At Eussley, as previously stated, there are a great number of Welcome candidates, including the colt the owner purchased from Mr Webb, by Xeolinus, out of Wave ; Mr X, Walker’s Doris, by Leolinu), out of Watersprite ; and Xeonora, Ada, and Elaine, bred by Mr Stead himself, all by Xeolinus, and out of Gossip, X’Orient, and Equation respectively. Surely among such a crowd as this something will be found to go a bit and stay. Soso Neath, the daughter of Xeolinus, and the speedy Xacenfeed is not in work, but a very large number of the Middle Park representatives are. Digby Grand,in the Chokebore stable, has been suffering from a curb, and it is questionable whether Outta will be able to give him work enough to get this colt fit. The En Avant and Idalla colts have been doing a lot of good work with Bay, and so have Mr P. Butler’s Charm filly by Traducer and Korari filly out of Awatea. Mr John Xunn is progressing well with Welcome Jack, the good-looking son of Traducer and Mies Flat, and the daughter of Becky Sharp (a Traducer mare), by Papapa. She is the most promising one by that sire I have yet seen. The chesnut filly by Traducer, from Sweetbriar, is the property of the gentleman who races under the name of Mr Bate, as is also the bay filly by Traducer, from Fleurange, but I’m not at all clear as to whether they are likely starters or not. The Bupee filly, I think, is likely to be an absentee, but Siesta, the daughter of Hammock, is getting on well with Fuller at Crisis Xodge. The only remaining one is the filly by Papapa out of Bod Rose, and she, I think, is not in work. At any rate there is every prospect of a really good field, and one showing a lot of quality. Xet us hope the best of them will stand up, and wo shall see a grand finish over the new straight half-mile course recently made, and which will avoid the awkward turn into the etraight, so trying to two-year-olds.
