SUBSIDIES TO LOCAL BODIES.

[PBKBB ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM. J WELLINGTON, September 22. The following clause is embodied in tbs Appropriation Bill : —ln lieucf sums payable as subsidies to County and Borough Councils and to Boad Boards and Biver Boards under section 5 of the Financial Arrangements Act, 1876, Amendment Act, 1877, there shall bo paid out of the consolidated fund during the nine months of the current financial year, from the first day of April lest past to the thirty-first day of next December, those days inclusive, in respect of all sums received by way of general rates during the year ending the thirty-first day of March, one thousand eight hundred and eighty, t,he sums following—(1) To each Borough Council a enm equal to seven shillings and sixpence for every pound of general rates so received by each sneh Council; (2) to each Boad Board and

J Eirer Eoad a gam equal to ten shilling* for | eve 17 pound of general rates eo received by 1 each such Board ; (3) to each County Council I a gum equal to ten shillings for every pound of general rates so received by each such Council, or < qaol to ten shillings for every pound on the total of the sums so received by all Boad Beards or parts of Boad Boards within a County, whichever of snoh two sums is the greater. Provided that in any County where no Eoad Board exists, or in respect of general rates levied in any part of a county not included in a road district, there ahall be paid to the council of each such county twenty shillings for every one pound of general rates so received, provided that for the purposes of this section no sum shall be deemed to be received by any snch council or board in excess of the sum receivable on a rate of one shilling in t' e pound of the annual value of rateable property, and this proviso shall be deemed to have been in operation in any previously existing enactment providing for the payment of subsidies to local bodies.
