HOSPITAL AND CHARITABLE AID BOARD.

The above Board met on Wednesday last, at four o’clock. Present —Mr Thomson (chairman), the Mayor of Christchurch, the Mayor of Sydenham, Dr. Turnbull, Mr J, G. Hawkeu, The Hospital committee reported that during the fortnight ending September 17th there were 19 patients admitted into the Hospital and 36 discharged, leaving 60 patients in the institution. During the same period 5 deaths occurred. For the corresponding period of last year the number of patients in the Hospital was 47. An application was received from the carpenter to be allowed to reside outside the Hospital, in consequence of the arrival of his ■wife from England, and applying for a rise in salary. Mr Hawkes testified to the usefulness of the carpenter, who did a largo amount of work. The committee recommended that the application be granted. On the motion of Mr Hawkes, seconded by Mr Brown, it was resolved that the carpenter (Niokson’s) wages be increased from 28s to 425, in lieu of his board and lodging. A letter from the Colonial Secretary’s Office, confirming Dr. Singleton’s appointment to the Akaroa Hospital cottage, was read, also one from the doctor accepting the -appointment.—From the Town Clerk of Lyttelton, acknowledging letter from this Board as to water passing through Orphanage premises.—A letter from Mr and Mrs Froggitt, complaining of their dismissal from their positions at Akaroa Hospital cottage, as being calculated to damage their characters, and asking for compensation. —The Chairman pointed ont that the letter contained nothing further than had already been reported. The secretary read the minute of a resolution already passed os to this case, stating that no compensation could be allowed, but that any further statement he had to offer would be considered. —The Chairman suggested that a reply should be sent that no fresh evidence waa forthcoming as to why Mr Froggitt should not be dismissed. —A resolution wao passed to the effect that Mr Froggitt having failed to show cause why the Board should reconsider his dismissal, the Board decl ned further inquiry, but that nothing derogatory to Mr Froggitt’s character was implied by the dismissal. A report on the Orphanage was read as follows :—The Orphanage committee have had under their consideration the letter from the chief gaoler offering to supply bread made at the gaol to the Orphanage. The committee are desirous of co-operating with the Government in this matter, and they therefore recommend that the offer be accepted, provided it can be supplied under the ordinary contract rates. —The report was considered highly satisfactory. The caretaker of the Ashburton Home reported that since last report there had been ao admissions or discharges, and there were now forty-two inmates in the institution. The Board then proceeded to consider the applications for the appointment of medical officer, Charitable Aid Department, rendered vacant by the resignation of Dr. Deamer. Applications were received from the following ■eutlemeo : —Drs. P, Dpylo, D, F. Moore and fX J. Bussell. An application was also read from Dr. A. F. G. Meiklo, house surgeon to the Hospital, and suggesting that Dr, Grey might act as his substitute in the event of his (Dr. Meikle’a) application being accepted. The Board voted by ballot, and elected Dr. Doyle to the position. The secretary wrote suggesting the appointment of an officer to attend charitable aid oases in Timaru at a salary of £3O per annum. The consideration of the matter was -deferred.

After disposing of some charitable ail oases the Board adjourned.
