The Orient Company’s steamship Cotopaxi, which left Melbourne on August Bth, arrived at Plymouth yesterday. CALCUTTA, September 19. Fighting near Candahar.
Telegrams received to-day report that hostilities have commenced between the Ameer’s and Ayoub Khan’s forces. Firing was hoard for several hours on Saturday last in the direction of Candahar.
WASHINGTON, September 19. The President’s Case Hopeless.
This morning’s bulletin from Long Branch reports that President Garfield has suffered from repeated rigours, and his physicians state that his case is now hopeless. It is feared that his death may take place at any moment.
