At the vrooi to-day 10,700 bales were catalogued, making a total of 173,800 offered sinco the opening. A fair demand was experienced. Fatal Landslip. Telegrams have been received frovi Berne, announcing that a great laadslipi has occurred at Elm, in the Canton of" Glarns, Switzerland. Nearly the whole town is buried, and over 200 persons have been killed. Earthquakes News is to hand from Persia that several severe shocks of earthquakes has been experienced at Khoi, a town in the north of that country, causing great destruction to property and some loss of life. ALEXANDRIA, September 12. /ffairs in Egypt. It has transpired that Oherif Pasha has definitely declined the call of the Khedive that he should accept the Presidency of the Council ef Ministers. He informed his Majesty that he could not consent to submit to the dictation of the military. The crisis in this country continues to increase, and the mutineers in the army are now assuming a most menacing attitude. CALCUTTA, September 13. AfghanTelegrams are to hand from Afghanistan announcing that the Ameer's forces have arrived within eight miles of Candahar, and are encamped in a strong' position. It is further reported that hostilities have already commenced against Ayoub Khan, and that the Ameer'sartillery have opened fire on Candahar. NEW TOBK, September 12. Change of Weather.

Telegrams received to-day from Long Branch report that President Garfield has suffered a relapse. His physicians further report that one of his lungs is affected, and his condition is again deemed most critical. OTTAWA, Septemher 12. Aquatic. At the International Sculling Regatta* Toronto, to-day, the race for the single sculls was won hy Ross. The Consolation Race was won by Edward Trickett, of Sydney, beating Gandnar and Hosmer. Hi* Honor Chief Justice Sir James Prendergait was sworn in as Acting-Governor-at 5.30 this afternoon before Mr Justice Biohmond. The Premier, Colonial Secretary,. Postmaster-General, and Minister for Native Affairs were also present. The Steamer Tui. The steamer Tui, which grounded at Waitara river yesterday, is now lying on the beach clear of the sea. She appears to beseriously damaged, having several holes in her bottom. Efforts will be made to-night to float her and take her higher up the river. Rough on Employees. Instructions havo been given for all Civil servants appointed since October, 1876, who have not been vaccinated, to have the operation performed, in accordance with the provisions of the Pablio Health Act, to which attention was called in the House recently. TIMABTT, September 13. Fire. A six-roomed wooden house and shop in the Main South road was totally destroyed by fire this evening. It was owned and occupied by Mrs Hope, who stated that her insurances are £2OO in the Standard and £3OO in the Northern Assurance. She estimates her loss at £SOO. The fire is supposed to have been caused by a candle setting fire to the curtains in one of the bedrooms upstairs. DUNEDIN, September 13. Parliamentary. Mr Horace Bastings will stand for one of the Dunedin city electorates at the next election. INVERCABGILL, September 13. Harbour Board. The Bluff Harbor Board to-day decided to dispense with the services of its secretary and treasurer in consequence of his bankruptcy. Applications are to be invited for the post. The Board also resolved to purchase a Priestman dredge of the largest size for the purpose of deepening the berths at the wharf.
