[PBE PBESB ASSOCIATION.] AUCKLAND, September 2, Banking News. Mr H. A. Watt, accountant of the Bank of New Zealand, leaves Auckland for Christchurch. He has been appointed ActingManager of the Christchurch branch. Land Settlement. Negotiations have been completed between Mr Halcombe and the Patetere Association. 200,000 acres are to be transferred to h'tn as representative of the English Emigration Aid Society, 1000 acres being ploughed and levelled for a township twenty-nine miles from Cambridge. FireA fire broke out in the house of Mr Thomas Kelly, Alexandra street. Mrs Kelly, in attempting to extinguish the flames, got badly burnt about the face and hands. The brigade suppressed it after some damage. NAPIER, September 2, The Post Office Thief. Four charges against F. W. Rondle, for stealing letters from the Napier Post-office, were investigated at the Resident Magistrate’s Court to-day. The evidence against him was very strong. Rendle admitted opening on letter with money in it. One witness identified his own handwriting on some burnt fragments of letters found in a grate in Rendle’s apartments. Another charge of letter-stealing and a charge of having twentyfive skeleton keys in his possession will be gone into on Tuesday, to which date he was remanded. The Court intimated its intention of committing the prisoner on the charges heard to-day. CHARLESTON, September 2. InquestAt the inquest on the body of Emma pell, who committed suicide by cutting her throat yesterday, the jury returned a verdict of "Feio de sc." DUNEDIN, September 2. The New Duties. The principal warehousemen here have telegraphed to the Colonial Treasurer that they cannot see in what way the proposed abolition of duties on cotton goods will benefit the public to any perceptible degree. Their telegram concludes :—“ It is earnestly requested that further consideration bo given to the matter before any such change be completed, and it is therefore respectfully suggested that the duties remain unaltered.” Similar telegrams were sent to the members for Dunedin. Indignation MeetingIt is proposed to convene a public meeting to condemn the action cf the stoijewallors. Mining Accident. George Weatherill, a miner at Roxburgh, was killed last evening at seven o’clock by a fall of earth at Messrs Woodhouse and Lucas’s claim. The Watch Robbery. Harriet York, formerly charged with stealing a watch from the man Campbell, found dead in the Octagon, a few days ago, has been discharged, as it was a case of mistaken identity. John Dannar and Annie Lockwood are now accused and hare been remanded,
