The diplomatic relations between Germany and the Vatican, which for some time past have been somewhat strained, have now assumed a more friendly character. The credentials of the newlyappointed Roman Catholic Bishop of Treves received official recognition to-day from the Imperial Government. CAPETOWN, August 31. Wreck of a Mail Steamer. Telegrams are to hand from Port Elizabeth reporting that the steamer Fenton, 1088 tons, owned by the Union Steamship Company, has been wrecked at Quoin, a point in the neighborhood of Algoa Bay. The vessel is reported to have had fully two hundred persons, on board, and of these only twenty-seven have been saved. The news of the disastor as caused great excitement throughout the colony. CALCUTTA, September 1. The Indian Difficulty. The prompt advance of the Ameer Abdurrahman is causing a reaction in his favor among the Native tribes in the neighborhood of Khelat, who are assisting him with money and arms.
