On Saturday, a building situated at the toot of the Moutere Hill, known as the Golden Lion, and which formerly was an hotel, was destroyed by fire, but no full particulars are to hand. WELLINGTON, August 30. The Smuggling CaseThe smuggling case was concluded to-day, and judgment reserved until Thursday. O AMARU, August 30. The Brutal Assault Case When Augustus, charged with brutally ill-treating his wite, came up for sentence to day, Mr Watt, R.M., said since the ease was last before the Court the matter had been brought under the notice of the Government, and ho had been called upon to make a full report. He would send the depositions and his summing up to Wellington to morrow, and in the meantime allow the case to stand where it is. Sentence was deferred until Wednesday, September 7th.
