[By Teleosaph.] (Per s.b. Arawata, at Auckland.) MELBOURNE, August 18. A pawnbroker's shop in Bourke street was entered yesterday morning, and £SOO worth of jewellery and cash stolon. A violent thunderstorm V.as occurred at Ararat, during which a lad named Wallace was killed by lightning. The lad with his aunt sought shelter under a tree, and both were struck by the lightning, and rendered insensible. The lightning passed down the lad’s body and burst his boat. The woman was much burnt, but will probably recover. The missionary steamer Dayspring has returned from her South Pacific cruise. She put in hero for provisions. The Australian Freezing Company yesterday completed freezing 3800 sheep and a large quantity of beef for the Orient, forming the moat extensive shipment yet attempted. SYDNEY, August 18th. The cose of Hyman v Watson and others for libel in the “ Daily Telegraph ” was begun and adjourned to-day. The cause of action was the accidental substitution in a law report of plaintiff's name for that of the party agair.at whom he had taken proceedings. The same error waa made by the “ Herald,” which likewise received writs, but compromised. Smallpox continues steadily to attack fresh victims. The arrangements of the Government are severely animadverted upon by the Press. When sufferers are removed to quarantine, the other occupants of the house are confined ou tbe promises. Families. women and children are thus up in infected promises. A case has just occurred in which a son died at the quarantine station, and the mother and children were confined in the house. The mother is now infected. Alarming pitfalls have lately occurred at Tigb’s Hill, Newcastle, close to the workings of the Forndale colliery, threatening the safety of a number of houses, and leaving groat cavities in tbe earth. Tbe s.b. India, lately sold at Noumea by Messrs Howard Walker, of this city, is to be laid on the trade between this and New Caledonia. There are no traces of the murdered woman, Hamilton, who was recently murdered near Braidwood. A young Chinaman, with whom she cohabited, has been arrested on suspicion of being concerned in her murder. The evening she disappeared Ohuchong waa seen running after her, and was subsequently seen by children washing blood off a hood and underclothing. When arrested two £1 notes, with the name “ Martha Hamilton” written on the back, one bearing stains of blood, were found on him. Ohuchong will bo brought up to-morrow. The police are still searching. The Premier is improving in health, but in accordance with medical advice he will abstain from taking an active part in the business of Parliament. Menton, who escaped from Braidwood Gaol, is still unoaptured, and is supposed to have' gone to his old haunts, Clark’s gang, meny A whoso relations are sympathisers and are still about. It is thought that the escape of this man may lead to the organisation of a now gang. PERTH, August 18. A Bill for the abolition of the law of primogeniture has been brought before the legislature for consideration. ADELAIDE, August 18. The Government intend to introduce a Bill to give greater powers to officials in carrying out the providons of the Vaccination Act. The National Mutual Association obtained a verdict of £2OO yesterday against the travelling agent of the Australian Mutual Society for a slanderous imputation that the plaintiff’s cempany was financially unsound.
